COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The 37th annual Topeka Farm Show is underway at Stormont Vail Events Center today until Thursday, Jan. 8. Show director Dan Slowinski said new vendors and live cattle demonstrations highlight fresh offerings from more than 30 companies (including Midwest Drone Applications).  WIBW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Boys & Girls Clubs of Topeka will name Youth of the Year next Wednesday, Jan. 14, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Adams Club on SE 27th St., where finalists from local schools will compete to advance to the Kansas Youth of the Year competition.  WIBW
  • K-State resolved a student complaint about DEI-related practices in its student government after legislative pressure spurred changes. The senate removed a training requirement in September while the university updated procedures to meet state law.  Kansas Reflector
  • Washburn Rural High School announced its 2026 Hall of Fame inductees Tuesday — including Christopher Currie for his military service and the 1989 football team that won a state championship. A ceremony will be held Friday, Jan. 9 at 5:30 p.m. in the cafeteria with recognition during varsity basketball games.  WIBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Senate leaders introduced a bipartisan bill to ban cell phones in Kansas K-12 schools, and lawmakers expect it to pass the Senate in January before moving to the House. The law would apply to both public and private schools.  WIBW
  • Kansas lawmakers updated on Tuesday that the STAR bond program will fund 60% of the proposed $3 billion dome stadium and support attractions like Heartland Park Topeka, Kansas Speedway, and Flint Hills Discovery Center using captured sales tax revenues. The stadium has 30 years to repay the bonds.  WIBW

SPORTS NEWS

  • Kansas freshman Darryn Peterson left the Big 12 opener at UCF Saturday with cramps after scoring 26 points in 23 minutes, prompting coaches to consider reducing his playing time early in games to address recurring leg issues.  WIBW
  • Kent and Rhonda Lammers donated a $500,000 challenge gift to upgrade the Washburn Tennis Complex, adding new lighting, seating, and a wider court as part of the Athletics Corridor master plan. The donation is expected to spur further community giving for planned facility improvements.  WIBW
