COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Sparklight awarded $2K to East Central Kansas Economic Opportunity Corporation for its Rent and Utility Assistance Program—helping low-income residents in Emporia avoid housing loss. The grant strengthens support for families facing rising financial pressures.  WIBW
  • Barbara Smith from Junction City honored lost lives on Jan. 1 by carrying an American flag and a rucksack with names during the First Day Hike at Tuttle Creek State Park near Manhattan. She added names from Camp Mystic and 9/11 to keep memories alive.  WIBW
  • Helping Hands Humane Society is hosting a Pups and Pigs name-your-price adoption event starting today with a $0 minimum for dogs and guinea pigs. Binx, a five-year-old boxer mix with a partially enlarged heart who recovered from skin issues as a stray, is available for adoption.  WIBW
  • Starting Jan. 22, the library will sponsor free Geri-Fit exercise classes for seniors and those new to regular workouts at West Ridge Mall. The sessions run every Thursday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. (held at the Book Nook near the food court) and feature resistance training with provided equipment.  WIBW
  • Mirror Inc. received a letter on Jan. 2 confirming that funding for its Work for Success program will continue past July despite previous concerns. The reentry services program (which helps adults with personal and professional development) is supported by the Kansas Department for Children and Families.  WIBW

CULTURE NEWS

  • North Topeka Arts and Entertainment District has acquired a property to create housing in the future, though construction won’t start for several years. The district will also begin a mural project on the north end of Kansas Avenue bridge this year + lead artist Zandra Sneed-Dawkins will direct the work.  WIBW
