- ➤ The Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library is hosting a Kansas Day Scavenger Hunt for all ages from Jan. 25 to Jan. 31; visitors pick up a clue sheet at the Kids Library to search for eight Kansas state symbols and earn a prize. WIBW
- ➤ From the Land of Kansas is offering a limited-edition Kansas 250 gift box featuring locally made products to celebrate America’s 250th birthday during the holiday season. Sammy Gleason (Kansas Agriculture Department) and Rosa Cavazos (Kansas 250th committee) are promoting the box at local events. WIBW
- ➤ The Fort Riley Mounted Color Guard performed a historic demonstration at EquiFest in Topeka this weekend as they fired shots from horseback and showcased military traditions. The Army reversed an earlier decision by retaining mounted units (preserving a proud local legacy). WIBW
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ The Kansas Department of Labor released the December 2025 jobs report showing unemployment steady at 3.8% and a drop of 4,500 nonfarm payroll jobs from November. Private sector jobs fell by 5,000 while government positions increased by 500, and labor force participation rose to 67.5%. WIBW
- ➤ Local beef producer Jay Rezac explains that lower cattle numbers and rising input costs are pushing beef prices up, causing higher grocery bills and making it tough for new producers to start. USDA data shows cattle on feed are at record lows. WIBW

- ➤ KDOT offers drivers essential tips to protect vehicles during winter weather. The department advises washing cars every 10 to 14 days (to remove de-icing material) and keeping emergency kits, de-icer spray, and an ice scraper handy for safe travel. WIBW

- ➤ Helping Hands Humane Society urges pet owners to keep animals indoors and limit walks amid the extreme cold affecting Northeast Kansas today. The group advises using booties or petroleum jelly on pets’ paws and cleaning off any ice melt residue, and to call animal control for unsheltered animals. WIBW
