COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Baker’s Dozen at 1949 NW Topeka Blvd is hosting the Big Box Doughnut fundraiser from Feb. 3 to Feb. 28, with $7 donated per dozen sold to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Shawnee Co+ local businesses matching contributions to support the program.  WIBW

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Kansas Museum of History held its first full Kansas Day celebration in five years on Thursday, offering free hands-on lessons that featured rope-making demonstrations and cultural dances for students and community members to experience Kansas heritage.  WIBW
  • Topeka Festival Singers will perform a fundraiser Cabaret featuring solos and small ensembles with a mix of Broadway and humorous numbers. The shows are set for 2 p.m. on Feb. 1 and 7 p.m. on Feb. 2 at Topeka Civic Theatre’s Oldfather Theatre (tickets cost $30).  WIBW
  • To celebrate Kansas Day, a new book called 'Kansas Matters: 21st-century Writers on the Sunflower State' shows Kansas as a land of wild beauty and heartfelt stories. The collection brings together local voices who explore themes of home, land, and community.  Kansas Reflector

  • KU professor Misty Heggeness released Swiftynomics to explain how Taylor Swift’s fans boost economic change - her 15-city book tour began this week in Overland Park, and the book highlights the unseen work of caregivers in shaping our economy.  Kansas Reflector

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has issued a stream advisory for the northeast part of Lake Shawnee after a ruptured sewer pipe spilled sewage and may have raised E. coli levels. Officials advise residents to avoid water contact until the area is confirmed safe.  WIBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Shawnee Co. Parks + Rec has launched an online survey to invite public input for a new master plan that will guide improvements in park facilities and programs. The agency will hold its first engagement session (6 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 4) at the Big Gage Shelter House next to the Topeka Zoo.  WIBW
  • A proposed House Bill in Topeka would require the state health secretary to set guidelines for treating wastewater so it can return as tap water and add funding for extra staff. Proponents testified on Thursday as officials weigh concerns over the July 1 deadline.  Kansas Reflector
  • On Thursday morning, Kansas leaders celebrated Kansas Day at the Statehouse by cutting a themed 'Kansas' cake and playing Notes from Home on the Range. Gov. Laura Kelly, joined by filmmaker Kevin Wilmott and Congresswoman Sharice Davids, praised the state’s unity and progress.  WIBW
  • Shawnee County approved an exchange with USD 501 on Jan. 29 to trade Central Park’s Track and Football Field (with scheduled gym use) for Boswell Park, setting new terms for maintenance and recreational programming in the area.  WIBW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Topeka’s Cotton O’Neil Clinical Research now uses a new blood test approved in May to enroll patients in Alzheimer’s trials earlier as it detects amyloid plaque buildup before severe symptoms occur; free memory screenings are available for those over 50 (call 785-368-0744).  WIBW
