- ➤ Topeka Habitat for Humanity handed out winterization kits Friday at its North Topeka Re-Store on 121 NE Gordon St to help keep homes warm this winter+ Evergy specialists offered energy-saving tips and helped residents sign up for utility assistance while the Kansas Health Foundation funded the effort. - ➤ A three-month-old kitten (polydactyl with extra toes) is available for adoption from Helping Hands Humane Society at $100, which includes shots and spay/neuter; join the shelter’s two-week, Valentines-themed Tails on the Trails fundraiser in February if you can't adopt. WIBW
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Topeka & Shawnee Co. Public Library offers Oral History kits that include a camcorder, microphone, and guiding questions so cardholders can preserve family stories. The kits, available for three weeks along with the Oral History Workshop book and genealogy research access (with librarian help), help residents document their past. WIBW
- ➤ A bill that may require verifying every student's household income for free lunch is under review by Kansas lawmakers. Wichita Public Schools nutrition staff noted that the change (proposed by Sen. Doug Shane) could turn a seasonal check into work that lasts all year and affect at-risk funding levels. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ City officials announced that S.E. West Edge Road between S.E. 31st Street and S.E. 33rd Terrace along Lake Shawnee will close Tuesday, Feb. 3 for a sanitary sewer project, and the road will reopen in about two months — a detour is provided on nearby streets. WIBW
- ➤ The Topeka Fire Department announced on Friday it received a new Aerial 5 Fire Engine with upgraded tech and a 100-foot platform for emergency responses. Crews will train on the truck over the next few days and it will be housed at Fire Station (#5) once in service. WIBW
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ SENT Topeka held a Mocktail Mix & Mingle on Jan. 30 to celebrate Dry January and raise awareness for alcohol free fun. The event featured trivia, prizes, snacks & nonalcoholic drinks in support of local addiction recovery efforts. WIBW

- ➤ After an ice storm road trip, the Topeka Scarecrows returned home to play at 7:05 p.m. today at Landon Arena — they will also take the ice on Feb. 6 and Feb. 7. WIBW
