CULTURE NEWS

  • At the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library, the 21st annual African American Read-In held Sunday featured readings and creative writing prompts (attendees were encouraged to share personal stories) and will return in 2027.  WIBW
  • Washburn University hosted the All-American Band Concert Sunday afternoon, where about 60 musicians from Topeka and Northeast Kansas performed, and Sigma Alpha Iota sponsored the event & will use funds to offer music scholarships.  WIBW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Topeka Police Department is offering its 30th biannual citizens academy starting March 5, with classes held every Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. until May 28; interested adults must submit applications by Feb. 27.  The Topeka Capital-Journal
  • The Topeka Shawnee County Public Library held a prize pick up on Feb. 1 for its Winter Reading Challenge, where 1,100 readers got a mug and refreshments such as cookies + hot chocolate were served. More reading challenges will take place later this year.  WIBW
