- ➤ The 10th annual shelter showdown at Helping Hands Humane Society displayed five puppies trained by inmates at Topeka Correctional Facility in a Seahawks vs. Patriots preview adoption event. One puppy was adopted and four will become available in two to three weeks (updates are on the Humane Society website). WIBW
- ➤ Brewster Place celebrated its new resident bus on Friday, Feb. 6 — a project funded by community donations — as it replaced older vehicles to serve seniors on rides to appointments and outings. WIBW
- ➤ Breha, a two-year-old mixed breed, has spent 98 days at Helping Hands Humane Society, where dogs five months and older are Name Your Price adoptable starting at $0. A Kitty Karma Yoga session is held today at the shelter (SW 21st and Belle) along with other engaging activities. WIBW
- ➤ A Topeka family saw their nearly finished home burn early Tuesday when charging batteries for construction tools sparked a fire; they are thankful for neighbors' support & local donations while coping with the loss of one dog. WIBW

- ➤ The African American Topeka: The Map Project presentation will explore key Black history sites and will be held Wednesday, Feb. 18 at Brown v. Board National Historical Park (1515 SE Monroe St) with light refreshments at 5 p.m. and a free lecture at 6 p.m. WIBW
- ➤ Aviation Explorers Post 8 will host its annual swing dance fundraiser on Saturday, Feb. 21 at Vaerus Aviation at Forbes Field. The event will include swing dance lessons from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., live music from 7:45 to 10 p.m.—plus a nacho bar and silent auction. WIBW
- ➤ Warm weather boosted turnout at the First Friday Art Walk in NOTO on Feb. 6 as locals sought to shake off winter cabin fever. ArtsConnect said the mild temperatures and holiday shopping helped draw extra visitors. WIBW

- ➤ Representatives from the University of Kansas School of Medicine testified on Wednesday before the House Education Committee in Topeka to oppose House Bill 2488, which would change their pass-fail system to letter grades (they argue the current method better supports competency-based evaluations and a 100% residency match rate). - ➤ The Kansas Children’s Discovery Center is now hosting the Take Care with Peanuts exhibit to help kids learn about emotions through interactive activities with characters such as Snoopy and Charlie Brown until May 10. - ➤ Evergy announced Friday that the falcon Nemaha, which nested on its local building for 15 years since 2011, was found dead. With nesting season approaching, her mate Boreas may soon take on a new partner & a new pair may settle in the nest. WIBW

- ➤ Topeka Fire Department placed its new aerial fire engine with modern controls and a hundred-foot ladder at Station #5 today ahead of the open house from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.; it replaces a 15-year-old truck that broke down last year. WIBW
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The Jackson Co. Farm Bureau will host the Cultivate Confidence and FarmWell Forum on Feb. 21 at Holton Elementary to boost mental health for teens and ag professionals, with check-in times (1:30 p.m. for confidence-building and 3:30 p.m. for stress management) and a $15 fee per session. WIBW
