  • Helping Hands Humane Society hosts a Valentine’s Day pet adoption event today, offering cats and dogs at $14 fees at SW 21st and Belle — shelter hours are 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.  WIBW

CULTURE NEWS

  • Kansas native Angela Perry will perform at the Topeka & Shawnee Co. Public Library for the first Music for a Sunday Afternoon program at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 1. The free event offers fresh country tunes for local listeners.  WIBW

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Topeka gas stations offered unleaded fuel from $2.17 to $2.59 per gallon on Friday morning — while Kansas averaged $2.48 and the national average was $2.94, according to reports by AAA and GasBuddy.com.  WIBW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A new House bill would require school districts to transfer foster care records within two business days to help kids stay enrolled after placement changes & include a transport plan for students who remain at their original schools, though some officials worry the tight timeline may challenge compliance.  Kansas Reflector

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A controlled burn on Friday morning at the Metropolitan Airport Authority property on S.W. 57th Street and Topeka Boulevard sent smoke across highways + haze appeared along US-75 and Interstate 470; no injuries or property damage were reported.  WIBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Crews begin improvements on U.S. Highway 24 Monday as KDOT shifts traffic lanes and closes certain K-4/Oakland Expressway ramps in Topeka. Drivers should follow marked detours during these changes through early 2027.  WIBW
  • South Kansas Avenue between Southwest 5th and 6th Streets will close Monday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. for HVAC work at 555 South Kansas Ave (a detour via southbound Kansas Ave, westbound 4th, southbound Topeka Blvd and eastbound 6th is in effect).  WIBW
  • Shawnee Co. is hiring summer staff for aquatic centers, looking for 180 lifeguards and 30 cashiers with free American Red Cross certification for those at least 15 years old. Commissioner Aaron Mays said the county will also hire permanent dispatchers and meet with lawmakers on Mar. 3.  WIBW

SPORTS NEWS

  • Washburn men’s basketball won against Arkansas Fort-Smith on Thursday by nearly 30 points, outscoring them 51-22 in the second half to finish 81-53. The Ichabods will host Northeastern State Saturday at 3 p.m. on WIBW (13.1).  WIBW
