COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Topeka’s Polar Plunge for Special Olympics Kansas is set for 10 a.m. Feb. 28 at Topeka West High School, inviting community members to jump into cold water for a special cause; register+donate at PlungeKS.org.  WIBW
  • The Topeka Home Show will take place at Stormont Vail Events Center from Feb. 27 to March 1, featuring nearly 140 vendors and a new kids area with build-it kits from Lowe’s. Tickets cost $6 in advance and $9 at the door.  WIBW

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Prairie Band Ag, a subsidiary of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation, becomes one of Kansas’ first hemp fiber processors by turning 1,600 acres into fields for regenerative farming; its biodegradable products include animal bedding, cutlery, straws, and building materials that fund tribal community initiatives.  WIBW
  • Tariffs have raised costs and delayed shipments for Linda’s Afrikan Kreations, a boutique importing African art. Topeka business owner Linda Murphy Maina said extra fees increased her prices and slowed shipping as customers questioned higher costs.  WIBW
  • The Furniture Mall Outlet at West Ridge Mall will close its current location permanently and relocate, with a new address and timeline pending confirmation. The store remains open Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at (140 SE Jefferson Street) as it clears inventory.  WIBW

ECONOMY NEWS

  • FHLBank Topeka celebrated nearly $34 million in affordable housing funds on Feb. 23 — organizers highlighted 31 projects set to build or rehabilitate over 1,700 homes for low- and moderate-income families in Kansas, Colorado, Nebraska and Oklahoma.  WIBW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ross Elementary will hold a ribbon cutting for its new Musical Garden at 10 a.m. on April 4; a carnival on April 11 will invite the community to try the outdoor installations (metal sculptures played with mallets) at 1400 SE 34th St.  WIBW
  • A 1960 Topeka High alum, Carl Johnson, donated $25,000 (in honor of his wife) to fund teaching materials for science classes, and the school recognized his gift Monday. The donation will help buy an educational EKG machine for student labs.  WIBW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Oklahoma wildfires have spread into Southwest Kansas over the last week, causing irritant reactions like coughing and watery eyes for residents with asthma, COPD, and allergies — Dr. Tiffany McManis at Washburn University advises using fresh, high-efficiency HVAC filters and generic anti-histamines as burning increases.  WIBW

SPORTS NEWS

  • Team USA won its first Olympic men’s hockey gold in 46 years by defeating Canada on Feb. 22, inspiring local players who recalled past rivalries (and famous game films). The Topeka Scarecrows are set to play their next home game Friday at 7:05 p.m. against Baton Rouge.  WIBW
