COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Friends of the Kaw installed a safety kiosk near the Topeka Weir and boat ramps off NW Warren Street to help visitors check river flows and pick up free life jackets starting in April (QR code for updates) and expects more kiosks along the Kansas River by year-end.  WIBW
  • The Baileyville Benefit will be held Feb. 28 to March 1 at Nemaha Central High School in Seneca. The 44th annual event includes basketball and volleyball tournaments, silent and live auctions, and concessions to support neighbors facing medical challenges.  WIBW

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Plug and Play’s Animal Health accelerator began its 10th startup group yesterday, uniting global companies in diagnostics, packaging, and novel ingredients. The 17-week program will feature local networking events (Expo hosted in Topeka) to connect founders with regional experts.  Go Topeka

CULTURE NEWS

  • An event commemorating the 72nd anniversary of Brown v Board of Education is set for May 17 at Townsite Topeka, where civil rights attorney Ben Crump will speak and performance poet J. Ivy will perform (both are national award winners).  WIBW
  • Author Deric Gilliard visited a Topeka library Tuesday night to share insights from his books on civil rights heroes and his time in government (he explained lessons learned from advocacy and ongoing challenges today).  WIBW
  • The Topeka Spirit Fair will run 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 28 & March 1 at The Woodshed Event Center (1901 N. Kansas Ave). The event offers vendors, holistic workshops, and spiritual drumming demonstrations with tickets at $3 per day or $5 for a weekend pass.  WIBW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Washburn University holds Biology Night on Wednesday, Mar. 11 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the north lobby of Stoffer Science Building for high school students interested in biology who can tour labs and interact with faculty (and sign up for a scholarship opportunity) at this free event.  WIBW
  • Rossville senior James Wuensch won first place in the Kansas Masonic Foundation Essay Contest, earning a $4,000 prize to help pay for his tuition at Washburn University. His win also allowed his class to donate $2,500 to the Outpacing Melanoma Foundation (chosen to honor a community member battling the disease).  WIBW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Poet and spoken word artist Matt Spezia joined the Hear me. See me. podcast to share his motivation for mental health advocacy and his belief that words help heal. He will present in March at the Kansas Statehouse for Mental Health Advocacy Day + his work continues to inspire community support.  WIBW

SPORTS NEWS

  • WIBW-TV is set to air the women’s and men’s Washburn basketball games against Pittsburg State today; the women tip off at 5:30 p.m. and the men play at 7:30 p.m. on channel 13.5, sponsored by Topeka Red Robin.  WIBW
  • KU men’s basketball won 69-56 on Monday at Allen Fieldhouse when Tre White scored 23 points + got five rebounds, moving the team into second place in the Big 12. They will face Arizona Saturday at 3 p.m. on ESPN.  WIBW
