COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Faith Temple Church will host the Hands Full of Purpose Parade of Soups + Hygiene Giveaway tomorrow from 2 to 5 p.m. at 1162 SW Lincoln, offering free homemade soup and hygiene kits to those in need; supporters may also bring extra hygiene items.  WIBW
  • Rev. Dr. Linda Davenport Cummings of Stormont Vail received the Portrait of a Black Woman award from Friends of Yates during Black History Month. A former teacher, the chaplain became the first woman on the Kaw Valley District Minister’s Council and is a role model for Black women in ministry.  WIBW
  • The Pancake Breakfast & Silent Auction for Southwest Topeka Kiwanis is scheduled for 7 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 28 at Countryside United Methodist Church, 3221 SW Burlingame Rd. The $8 donation gets unlimited pancakes and silent bids to support school projects and food donations.  WIBW
  • The Topeka Scarecrows invited Woolly Farms out for a public skate today to build local ties and foster inclusion. Clients from the Meriden-based nonprofit supporting diverse abilities skated or joined by chair to share smiles and laughter.  WIBW

  • Stormont Vail Events Center presented its five-year strategic plan to the Shawnee County Commission on Thursday, outlining future renovation work at the Maner Conference Center + noting high attendance at Scarecrows games as the team considers extending its contract.  WIBW
  • Allan Towle, executive vice president at Heritage Bank, will retire effective Saturday, Feb. 28 after 40 years in banking. A retirement reception was held yesterday at the branch (600 S. Kansas) where he helped guide the bank post-acquisition.  WIBW

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Topeka Art Guild will host its Spring Indoor Fine Art Fair at Fairlawn Plaza Mall (SW 21st and Fairlawn) on March 7 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and March 8 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with 32 artists showing paintings, sculptures and jewelry indoors.  WIBW
  • The Kansas Silent Film Festival at Washburn University will feature Buster Keaton’s granddaughter Melissa Talmadge Cox, who will speak at a sold-out fundraising dinner and answer questions during select film showings, with events running today from 1:30 to 10 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.  WIBW

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Veterans received help sorting benefits and job opportunities at a KANSASWORKS job fair held on Thursday at the Topeka Workforce Center at 15th and Topeka Blvd, where 15 employers + veteran support groups provided guidance.  WIBW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Washburn Nursing Professor Belinda Eckert earned the Community Service Award from Kansas Head Start Association today at Sheldon Head Start by leading a program that sends nursing students to provide health assessments for over 200 preschoolers. The honor highlights her role in strengthening community ties.  WIBW

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The National Weather Service will host Severe Weather Awareness Week from March 2 through March 6 to offer seminars and safety tips that help residents prepare for sudden storms.  Kansas Public Radio
  • Fewer tornadoes are forecast for this spring in Kansas, though severe thunderstorms can bring damaging hail, straight-line winds, and flash floods. AccuWeather predicts storms will start late March and peak in April and May statewide.  The Topeka Capital-Journal
