- ➤ Students at Washburn Rural High School are fundraising to purchase art supplies, games and activities for patients at Children's Mercy hospital while supporting classmate Miles Timberlake (in round three of treatment) who was diagnosed with bone cancer last year. WIBW
- ➤ Back Country Horsemen of Kansas volunteer group maintains trails for walkers, runners, bicyclists and riders at local parks and lakes. They will join Kansas Trails Appreciation Day (today at the Statehouse) to celebrate their work and upcoming events. WIBW
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Yesterday, the city of Topeka honored Topeka West High School's theater department for its strong performance at the International Thespian Festival during Theater in Our Schools Month, and students from Topeka Public Schools will participate in Theater in Our Schools Advocacy Day on Wednesday, Mar. 11 at the Kansas Statehouse. - ➤ Topeka High Trojan Theatre is staging The Wizard of Oz from today to March 7 at THS Hoehner Auditorium; showtimes are 7 p.m. nightly with tickets at $10 for general admission and $8 for students + a raffle drawing on April 18 will offer diamond jewelry prizes. WIBW
- ➤ Cloudy skies kept tornado sirens off as Topeka Public Schools conducted a drill at Jardine Elementary School (725 students) on Wednesday at 10 a.m., where students moved safely to designated shelters in line with state requirements. WIBW

- ➤ Tomorrow will be First Alert Weather Day in Topeka as severe weather risks include hail, damaging wind and tornadoes. Residents are advised to sign up for WeatherCall and use the WIBW Weather app to stay informed. WIBW
- ➤ Southwest Kansas rancher Cole Gardiner is recovering after the Ranger Road wildfire burned 35,000 acres near Ashland and disrupted his operations, including the loss of some cattle. State foresters remain on high alert as high winds and low humidity keep fire dangers volatile. Kansas Reflector
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The USDA approved a new SNAP waiver that excludes candy & soft drinks from eligible SNAP purchases for Kansans starting Feb. 15, 2027, as Governor Kelly said the move aims to promote healthier eating. Retailers in states with similar bans helped shape the plan. WIBW
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ After its advocacy day at the Kansas Statehouse on Wednesday, the American Heart Association urged lawmakers to require all counties to have 911 dispatchers give CPR instructions, noting that nearly half lack T-CPR (important in rural areas) and that schools should include CPR training in their emergency plans.
