  • Helping Hands Humane Society said Baby Girl, a three-year-old boxer pit bull mix who came from a foster home after a previous adoption, needs a calmer home. Tickets for Paws in the Park are on sale for April 18 at the shelter on SW 21st and Belle.  WIBW

BUSINESS NEWS

  • West Ridge Mall has announced it will strictly enforce its Parental Escort Policy after 3 p.m., requiring guests under 16 to be with a parent or guardian (aged 21 or older) and allowing one escort for up to four youths to ensure a safe shopping environment.  WIBW
  • The new WIBW News app makes it easier for locals to stay informed; it launched on Mar. 6 and is free to download or update from the app store+ it works for both iOS and Android.  WIBW

CULTURE NEWS

  • Brewster Place artists showed their work at Fire Me Up Ceramics’ Sage Crossing Gallery during March’s First Friday on Friday night; the exhibit runs through the rest of the month at 1000 N Kansas Ave.  WIBW
  • Gage Park is getting new changes this month as Dene Mosier (head of the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center) and Christina Castellano (CEO of the Topeka Zoo) lead improvements during Women’s History Month while stressing mentorship and representation for girls.  WIBW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Eight Returned Peace Corps volunteers visited Topeka Collegiate School on Friday during its semi-yearly Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Day. They rotated through classrooms to share service stories and answer student questions while a luncheon was held + marking the event’s 12th occurrence.  WIBW
  • The Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library is hosting Lego-themed activities for kids during spring break at 1515 S.W. 10th Ave. Options include a Lego scavenger hunt and a 500 Lego Builds challenge on Friday, March 20.  WIBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Melody Ellis testified on Thursday in support of House Bill 2599, which exempts minor-owned businesses from sales taxes and fees on earnings up to $10,000; she cited her own ventures (an art business and lemonade stand) as examples of how the law could boost opportunities for young entrepreneurs.  Kansas Reflector

HEALTH NEWS

  • AAA warns that losing an hour of sleep from Daylight Saving Time beginning Sunday at 2 a.m. can increase drowsy driving, a factor behind a 6% rise in fatal crashes according to studies. Drivers are urged to get enough sleep and take breaks to remain alert on the roads.  WIBW

SPORTS NEWS

  • The NJCAA Track and Field Championships are underway at Washburn University with athletes competing in high jump, pole vault, shot put and sprints. The weekend event, running through Saturday evening, is expected to boost the local economy by about $1.2 million thanks to teams+families filling local hotels.  WIBW
