ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Emergency crews responded to a two-vehicle injury collision at S.W. 6th Avenue and Gage Boulevard reported at 9:07 a.m. on March 18 and there was no immediate word on injuries.  WIBW

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Topeka Zoo Conservation Center brings back its Summer Nights with behind-the-scenes guided tours starting March 20. Visitors can join the tours from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. for $23 or $20 for members, but tickets are limited to 20 people.  WIBW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Topeka & Shawnee Co. Public Library will host a free program on Saturday, March 22 from 10 to 11 a.m.—Dr. Michaeline Chance-Reay will present on the historic role of the Harvey Girls in railroads and how they shaped Kansas and U.S. history.  WIBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Topeka city council leaders approved up to $180,000 for a permanent community hockey rink north of Evergy Plaza—ensuring local residents have better access to ice sports as pro hockey uses a different facility. They also renamed the water treatment plant in honor of Jack Alexander, the city’s first Black water commissioner.  WIBW
  • Senate President Ty Masterson said a proposal to let voters elect Kansas Supreme Court justices will give power back to the people, while critics worry the plan may lead to partisan races and dark money (Senate Resolution 1611 passed in early March). The House will hold a hearing on the resolution tomorrow and if it is approved by two-thirds of lawmakers, the change will appear on the ballot in August.  Kansas Reflector
  • The Topeka City Council took the first step to offer developer Jim Klausman tax incentives on 16 Lauren's Bay lots despite his owing millions in back taxes—he will repay part of the owed money at $2.25 per square foot for a total of $525,333. A public hearing on the proposal will be held on April 8 to discuss further incentive details.  The Topeka Capital-Journal
  • During Tuesday's meeting, Topeka City Council approved over $1.4 million for a neighborhood improvement project using funds from city bonds, utilities, and HUD dollars. The project—part of the DREAMS Neighborhood Improvement Initiatives—will upgrade public infrastructure and affordable housing over the next two years.  The Topeka Capital-Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Kansas center Hunter Dickinson was named a Third Team All-American by the Associated Press on Tuesday—he averaged 17.6 points and 10.0 rebounds per game for the Jayhawks. He will play No. 10 seed Arkansas in the NCAA Tournament Round of 64 on Thursday at 6:10 p.m. CT.  WIBW
