CULTURE NEWS

  • Today on A.M. Extra, hosts Reina Flores and Jared Broyles will discuss local thrift store bargains as part of the Thrifty Thursday feature broadcast live from the WIBW-TV newsroom at 8 a.m. on weekdays on wibw.com and Roku.  WIBW
  • On Thursday night, the Healing in Color exhibit featured art created by incarcerated women in Shawnee County at NOTO Arts Center. Hosted by the Magenta Girls Initiative and the Community Action Against Human Trafficking Rotary Club, the event showcased art as a tool for healing (and hope) through personal expression.  WIBW

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Regional gas prices reached $3.39 per gallon on March 16, up from $3.28 last week, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). Analysts predict that prices may increase another 20 to 30 cents as traders factor in supply concerns and rising spring demand.  The Topeka Capital-Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Governor Laura Kelly signed a bill banning cell phones and personal devices during school hours at public and accredited private schools, allowing exceptions for individualized education plans or medical needs & reserving school phone use for emergencies.  WIBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Westbound I-70 in downtown Topeka will close at 10 a.m. today for Polk-Quincy Viaduct repairs & reopen by 6 p.m. Sunday, with the disruption affecting the route between S.W. Topeka Boulevard and S.E. 10th Avenue and a lane closure on S.E. Madison.  WIBW

HEALTH NEWS

  • To keep homes safe this spring cleaning season, the Topeka Fire Department offers advice on proper landscaping, cleaning dryer lint, and safe grilling distances. Residents can also apply for a free residential burn permit (valid for one year) to handle yard debris safely.  WIBW

  • Washburn baseball pulled a comeback win against Fort Hays State in a 10-inning contest on Wednesday, March 18 — the Ichabods host NWMSU today.  WIBW
