COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Due to wind chill under 40 degrees, Gage Park's mini train and carousel opened at noon on Thursday instead of starting earlier. Warmer weather will allow them to operate daily until Sunday—then they will switch to weekend service during the school year before running daily in summer.  WIBW
  • Members of the Capper Foundation’s Adult Day Services program have been taking karate lessons at Moore’s Martial Arts Academy in Topeka—yesterday they showed their new skills to family, friends and staff. Their training builds discipline and confidence while breaking the stigma around disability.  WIBW
  • The Children’s Alliance of Kansas will support the new SOUL Family foster care program—allowing teens to choose a trusted person as guardian while still receiving benefits—and will form an advisory group funded by a grant from the Annie E. Casey Foundation to guide the project. The program, created by legislation last year, aims to help foster teens reach permanency by letting them define family in their own way.  Kansas Reflector

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Topeka Police are investigating a fatal one-vehicle crash that happened early today on Southwest Wannamaker Road near Sams Club when a woman driving northbound left the road and hit a pillar under the I-470 bridge—she was pronounced dead at the scene.  WIBW

CRIME NEWS

  • A Topeka man—Andre Christopher James Quinton JR—was found guilty in a 2022 homicide case at Traveler’s Inn after a jury trial that ran from March 17 to March 20; he was convicted of first and second degree murder and attempted aggravated robbery in connection with the killing of Jahlel Brundidge and will be sentenced on May 7 at 1:30 p.m.  WIBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Thursday, the Kansas House passed a resolution denouncing the planned satanic black mass at the Statehouse on March 28 as a despicable, blasphemous and offensive sacrilege. Rep. Sean Tarwater, a devout Catholic, prayed for his colleagues during the debate—warning that the event undermines respect for all religious beliefs.  Kansas Reflector
  • The Leavenworth County District Court dismissed a lawsuit filed by the Archdiocese of Kansas City demanding that Michael Stewart of the Satanic Grotto surrender sacred items. Stewart denied the claims and accused the Church of trying to bar his group from public spaces ahead of a Black Mass planned for March 28—he said the items were not obtained illegally.  WIBW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Stormont Vail Health will host a free Welcome Baby Jubilee event from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 6 at Pozez Education Center in Stormont Vail Hospital for expectant mothers, siblings and support people to ask questions and learn about local pregnancy and parenting resources. The event will also offer the Tdap vaccine for fathers, grandparents, partners and other family members to help protect newborns.  WIBW
  • Kansas health officials said the state now has six measles cases in unvaccinated children under 17. The cases were reported in southwest counties and none required hospitalization + officials advise making sure children get vaccinated.  WIBW

SPORTS NEWS

  • March Madness is set to drive major sports betting interest in Kansas with an expected nearly $3.1 billion wagered on the tournaments nationwide and over $252 million wagered locally last season. The Kansas Lottery reported that fans eagerly bet on KU, K-State, and Wichita State games — with KU playing tonight.  KSNT
