COMMUNITY NEWS

  • McCrite Plaza celebrated 50 years of senior care with a St. Patrick’s themed open house — the McCrite family started the center in 1975 and still runs independent and assisted living services. Cassidy McCrite said the center thrives because strong local support and a family bond have kept it going.  WIBW

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A woman died early Friday when her car left the street and struck a bridge pillar in the 1400 block of S.W. Wanamaker Road, with responders arriving at about 12:05 a.m.—the investigation is ongoing.  The Topeka Capital-Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • On March 20, Dana Chandler asked to be released from jail on bond while filing motions for law library access, counsel and a trial transcript as she appealed her two first-degree murder convictions for the 2002 double murder of her ex-husband Mike Sisco and his fiancée Karen Harkness — a sentencing date has not been set.  WIBW

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Shawnee County park staff are removing invasive species including callery pear and bush honeysuckle — trees once planted for beauty that have grown uncontrollably — and will replace them with native trees to provide reliable shade.  KSNT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Greater Topeka Partnership announced that CEO Matt Pivarnik will leave to serve as President and CEO of the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce (final day May 18) after nearly nine years of service. A search committee led by incoming GTP Chair Dr. JuliAnn Mazachek will soon begin finding his replacement.  WIBW
