COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Junior League is a finalist for Evergy's Hometown Grant to fight period poverty by providing free hygiene kits to girls and women through community organizations in Shawnee County. Voters can support the project via Evergy's pinned Facebook post by Wednesday at 5 p.m.  WIBW
  • WIBW was removed from DISH nearly two weeks ago when fair terms could not be agreed upon. DISH customers are encouraged to call 833-8-KEEPUS to help bring WIBW back so viewers can watch programs like March Madness and NCIS.  WIBW

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Lyric Arts Trio will perform free at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 29 at the Topeka & Shawnee Co. Public Library. The trio features Grammy-winning vocalist Sarah Anderson & clarinetist Elena Talley & pianist Dan Velicer as they present classical pieces celebrating poetry in music.  WIBW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Auburn-Washburn Unified School District 437 selected Katie Collier as its new superintendent after a comprehensive national search. Collier, who brings over 30 years of education experience, will begin her role on July 1.  WIBW
  • Seaman High School students (about 50 in total) will lead docent sessions at the Kansas History Museum from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday, March 27 as they present researched exhibits on local history, covering topics like immigration and Quantrill’s Raid.  WIBW
  • Emporia State University has been chosen for NASA's spring ARISS Project that will let students speak directly with crew aboard the International Space Station. An event called Signals from the Stars is set for Saturday, Mar. 28 at 1:30 p.m. at the Emporia Public Library.  WIBW

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Environmental groups gathered at the Kansas Capitol on the 10th annual Wealth Day to learn about water, air, land, transportation & health issues and the benefits renewable energy can bring. Organizers stressed that ongoing efforts are needed to protect our clean environment for future generations.  WIBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Motorists on I-70 will face brief delays as KDOT begins an $11 million resurfacing project Monday, March 30 in Dickinson County. The project will cover 8.5 miles with patching, overlay, striping and rumble strips, and it is expected to finish in late September.  WIBW
  • Shawnee County’s annual homeless count from January showed a 32-person drop overall + unsheltered numbers remained unchanged at 151, county housing officials said. They stressed that ongoing support is needed to help individuals move toward stable housing.  The Topeka Capital-Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • A Topeka couple in their 40s, diagnosed with colon cancer several months apart in 2024, now urges locals to get early screening when symptoms occur as they focus on treatment and raising their two boys (ages 8 and 13).  The Topeka Capital-Journal

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • In February, Shawnee County’s median home listing price rose to $244,500 from $225,000 last month, with 156 new listings and homes averaging 1,857 sqft at $127 per sqft & a 4.4% increase in price per sqft compared to last February.  The Topeka Capital-Journal
