ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Crews responded early Wednesday to multiple brush fires reported south of S.W. 109th Street and Hoch Road in northern Osage County near the Shawnee County line; no damage or structures were threatened.  WIBW

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Topeka & Shawnee Co. Public Library will host the Local Author Fair (featuring more than 20 local authors) from 4 to 7 p.m. on March 30 as local writers gather to connect with readers.  WIBW
  • Topeka Zoo will host a space camp on April 13 (5:30–7:30 p.m.) and an Earth Day Girl Scouts event on April 22 (5–7 p.m.); both require advance registration. Camp fees are $20 for members, $25 for others, and event fees are $8 for adults and $6.50 for children.  WIBW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today, Ukrainian refugee and USD 501 teacher Larysa Chernytska lost her work authorization and driver's license when her two-year humanitarian parole expired. She has waited six months for a renewal decision as federal services and local officials push for expedited action so she can continue teaching and supporting her family.  The Topeka Capital-Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Drivers in southwest Topeka may face delays today as a mobile crew crack-seals pavement on SW 21st + Wanamaker, temporarily closing one lane. Work starts at 8:30 a.m. and is expected to finish by 4 p.m.  WIBW
  • Kansas lawmakers introduced House Bill 2595 to offer law students up to $3,000 per school year if they agree to practice in rural areas, and repay working rural attorneys' loans up to $100,000. The bill passed with bipartisan support and may go into effect as early as this fall.  Kansas Reflector
  • Crews will begin a $292,000 bridge project on westbound I-70 (a repair over Pretty Creek east of the K-99 interchange) on Monday, March 30, with one lane open, a 12ft width limit, and speeds reduced to 60 mph.  WIBW

SPORTS NEWS

  • Washburn’s Angelina Borg-Malec was named MIAA Women’s Co-Golfer of the Week after tying for third at the Firekeeper Open at Firekeeper Golf Course and Resort on Wednesday. This award marks her second honor in three weeks (the third in school history).  WIBW
  • Washburn junior Tommy Cecchetti earned the MIAA and GAC North Division Athlete of the Week honor after leading the Ichabods to two road wins, including a 6-0 set win in doubles and key singles victories. The team will face Newman in Wichita at 3 p.m. on Friday, March 27.  WIBW
