ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Topeka traffic accidents dropped by 5% in 2025, but the intersection of SW 21st & Urish Road registered 15 crashes making it the deadliest spot; officials credited targeted police enforcement & public works improvements for the decline.  The Topeka Capital-Journal

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A Topeka supermarket, Supermercado Nuestra Familia, will close on April 27 - some employees reported that operations may end earlier on April 10 with hours shifted to 7 a.m. - 7 p.m. The store at SE 29th and California opened last December.  WIBW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Gov. Laura Kelly signed a law banning personal cellphones (school devices are allowed) in K–12 schools to reduce class distractions.  Kansas Reflector

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Topeka Zoo reports that Tembo (a 56-year-old elephant) is adjusting well after her 10-year companion Cora passed away, and staff plan targeted exercises to help her stay strong. The zoo will not introduce another elephant to avoid added stress.  WIBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • KDOT will close eastbound I-70 from MacVicar Ave to 4th Street tomorrow at 8 a.m. for work on the Polk-Quincy Viaduct project + detours will guide drivers until the lane reopens by 4 p.m.  WIBW
  • Taiwan’s ambassador to the U.S., Alexander Tah-ray Yui, warned on Thursday (Mar. 26) during a Kansas House session that China plans to replace U.S. global leadership while promising more Taiwanese trade and investment to boost local industries.  Kansas Reflector
  • Residents from the Wakarusa area raised concerns about loud noise at the Buena Vista Event Center during a Shawnee County Commission meeting on Thursday. County officials said they will review zoning rules + send a letter to the center to address the issue.  WIBW
  • Larysa Chernytska and her daughter, who arrived from Ukraine two years ago, lost her work authorization on Wednesday after her paperwork expired and now face uncertainty as renewal delays risk her teaching job; nonprofit Top City Promise and Representative Derek Schmidt are urging faster processing for affected families.  WIBW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Stormont Vail installed a new biplane fluoroscopy scanner with 3D capabilities earlier this month to view two images inside the body at once, which speeds up diagnosis for stroke and trauma patients in Topeka. The scanner reduces procedure time and cuts contrast dye + radiation exposure for safer treatment.  WIBW
