- ➤ Topeka was named the 2024 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation because it works hard to plant, grow, and care for trees. Mayor Michael Padilla said on March 25 that the city's Arbor Day celebration and strong forestry programs—like planting a tree at the Statehouse—show its clear commitment to nature. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Topeka Police arrested 22-year-old Robert L. Hawkins IV after they responded to gunshots (heard at 2:00 a.m. Sunday) near the 1300 block of SW Clay St and booked him on charges (aggravated assault, criminal discharge of a firearm, interference with a law enforcement officer). WIBW
- ➤ A house at 1640 SW Buchanan was engulfed in flames Sunday morning and the neighboring home’s living room was damaged—neighbors recalled a man was found dead in October and a woman was later arrested on charges of murder and arson. WIBW
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On Sunday, Washburn University inducted 79 first-generation students into the Tri-Alpha honor society to recognize their academic success. University officials said the group meets requirements including 30 credit hours and a 3.2 GPA + aims to build support among first-generation students. WIBW
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Topeka is offering to pay half the cost of sidewalk repairs under its 50-50 program because property owners must cover the work—neighborhoods can also apply for the Dreams grant to receive extra funds and must complete repairs by 2026. KSNT
