COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Washburn University students in the Social Class in the U.S. course are collecting diapers and cash donations for The Diaper Depot, with drop-offs accepted from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily until Friday, April 3 at the Memorial Union and University Libraries.  WIBW

BUSINESS NEWS

  • MSC Radio Group announced Monday it will acquire four well-known Topeka radio stations, including WIBW AM/FM, pending FCC approval and with expected closure in early summer as it aims to enhance local programming and strengthen community engagement (focusing on news, sports, and agriculture).  WIBW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The state FBLA conference held at Stormont Vail Events Center on Monday featured hundreds of high school students honing their leadership and networking skills, and after Tuesday's results some will move on to compete for national honors.  WIBW
  • McCarter Elementary hosted the Go for Gold event where the Topeka Scarecrows joined students in Olympic-style games before assessment tests. School officials provided free tickets for Saturday night’s game (with discounted chaperone tickets available) to ease testing pressure.  WIBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Kansas State Board of Education named Lisa Coons, Reginald Eggleston and Jake Steel as finalists for the commissioner role after a national search. Each finalist will interview today with agency leadership before one is chosen on April 14 to succeed retiring commissioner Randy Watson.  WIBW
  • Kansas earned an A on a national report card after Gov. Laura Kelly signed a law on March 19 banning student cell phone use all day; the rule requires devices be stored securely (not in backpacks or lockers) to limit distractions, and four organizations announced the measure on March 30.  WIBW
