  • Bradley’s Corner Cafe staff will host a bake sale from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, April 3 during the monthly First Friday Art Walk to support Dawn Montgomery, a longtime waitress battling a rare cancer. The event is at 844 N. Kansas Ave & contributions can be made through Silver Lake Bank.  WIBW
  • Construction on the new Antioch Orthodox Church near 37th and Gage has paused for about two weeks due to subcontractor issues. Father Nikolai Meyers said the church aims to complete the fellowship hall and parking lot for services to begin within two years (near Burnett’s Mound).  WIBW
  • A 12-year-old from Wabaunsee County helped save his neighbor’s home last week by alerting 911 and assisting to control a fire during a red flag day.  WIBW
  • A Million Thanks invites Topeka residents to send letters to the 190th Air Refueling Wing now deployed in the Middle East to support Operation Epic Fury. Local businesses serve as drop-off sites while the nonprofit accepts online messages.  WIBW

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A basement fire broke out in Oakland on Monday night at a home on 619 N.E. Forest Ave (northeast Topeka) and firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze after spotting light smoke and a working fire in the basement. Officials say the cause remains undetermined.  WIBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At Fort Riley, Grimes Hall became the Hall of Heroes to honor nearly 100 fallen soldiers at a ribbon-cutting ceremony on March 31. The event included a street renaming honoring retired Command Sgt. Maj. Terry P. Richardson & offered solace to Gold Star families.  WIBW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Doctors urge younger adults to get colon cancer screening for symptoms like blood in stool or persistent belly pain, noting a rise in cases among those under 45. Dr. Manidhar Lekkala from the University of Kansas Cancer Center at St. Francis campus said early detection can boost survival rates.  WIBW

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Kansas Women’s Basketball team lost 67—70 in the WBIT semifinal to BYU, ending their 2025—26 season. Freshman Jaliya Davis scored 18 points and junior S’Mya Nichols added 14 as the Jayhawks recorded their first loss to BYU after two earlier wins.  WIBW
  • Washburn football is set to host its spring scrimmage on Friday, April 10 at 6 p.m. at Yager Stadium (with tailgating, a marching band, and Mr. Ichabod) while Emporia State will hold its scrimmage on April 24 at Welch Stadium.  WIBW
