- ➤ Kansas Gas Service observes National Safe Digging Month and advises residents to call 811 at least two working days before starting any digging project to mark underground utilities. - ➤ Crews responded to a report of a two-vehicle crash at Morse and N. Kansas Avenue in North Topeka on Tuesday morning at about 8:05 a.m.—no injuries were reported. WIBW
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Academics from KU will release a project on the Topeka Bottoms neighborhood—an art exhibit with over two dozen tabletop models and a documentary film exploring memories of a community cleared in the 1950s and 1960s for I-70. Visitors can attend the exhibition at Arts Connect on April 4 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. with an artist talk at 6:30 p.m., and the film will premiere on April 5 at 2:30 p.m. at the Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site with a recognition of contributors ahead of a Q&A session. KSNT
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Governor Kelly issued a verbal state of disaster emergency proclamation on April 1 due to a red flag fire warning in effect until April 2 and forecasts predicting extreme wildfire conditions in parts of the northwest and southwest—state resources were activated to assist local responders amid strong winds, low humidity and potential severe thunderstorms. - ➤ The Kansas Department of Commerce launched the SIGNS grant on April 1 to improve downtown retail and commercial signage. The grant offers up to $250,000 for projects that follow state guidelines—applicants must propose at least three signs and finish work within six months—supporting the unique character of historic downtowns. - ➤ The State of Kansas ended March with total tax collections of $636.9 million—which is 2% below estimates and 16.2% lower than last March. Officials will meet on April 17 to review the fall revenue estimate. WIBW
- ➤ The 190th hosted a survey team from the National Guard Bureau and active-duty Air Force at Forbes Field Tuesday to check if it can be the new base for KC-46 Pegasus operations. The Air Force will review seven bases and a final decision will come in the fall — officials said. WIBW
- ➤ Applications for the free Camp Courage program by the Topeka Fire Department are open from April 1 through May 1 for young women aged 16 to 20 to gain hands-on firefighting experience from June 2 to 6, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.—participants study fire-extinguisher use, hose deployment, rescue operations, and basic first aid under experienced female firefighters.
