COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Fans are invited to donate a pair of old shoes at the Scarecrows game on Friday, April 10 to support Sole Reason, which turns donated shoes into funds for new footwear for children in need. Donations can also be dropped off at Topeka Fire Dept. stations throughout April.  WIBW
  • On April 2, the Greater Topeka Partnership held its annual meeting themed 'Mission: Possible' featuring local officials, business leaders and community organizations. ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices are rising ahead of Easter weekend as national data shows unleaded fuel at $4.08 a gallon. AAA reports local prices in Topeka range from $3.19 to $3.65 for unleaded + from $4.29 to $4.90 for diesel.  WIBW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Thursday, the Kansas National Guard celebrated the restoration of its Kansas City armory, renovated with $4.9M in federal and $1.9M in state aid, which now hosts the STARBASE program offering hands-on STEM instruction for fifth graders statewide.  Kansas Reflector

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Groundwater levels in parts of the High Plains Aquifer rose by roughly 2.5 feet in 2025 due to timely rainfall, easing pumping needs for crops - though experts caution one wet year is not enough to reverse long-term depletion.  WIBW
  • The Climate + Energy Project canceled its Energy Navigators program when federal grant funds disappeared in January, ending a resource that helped Kansans with utility bills and home weatherization.   • Topeka Police introduced a new Belgian Malinois police dog and are asking residents to submit name suggestions on their Facebook page until Tuesday, Apr. 7, with a public vote to follow. The department seeks a name that is strong + unique for the new K-9.  The Topeka Capital-Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Brain Injury Association of Kansas will host its annual conference on April 16 and 17 at Maner Conference Center in Topeka. Survivors and families attend sessions on treatment on day one while professionals review new AI therapies on day two (registration ranges from $60 to $300 with aid available).  WIBW
  • Stormont Vail Hospital finished a $3 million renovation of its pharmacy to boost patient and employee safety at its 586-bed facility. The 18-month upgrade expanded storage and updated technology + enhanced the compounding area to support safe medication practices.  WIBW
  • Residents in apartments and townhouses should check that renters insurance covers full replacement costs in case of fire, as Kansas Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt noted depreciation may lower payouts. Topeka Fire stressed reviewing lease agreements and working with neighbors — especially for cooking safety — is important.  WIBW

  • The Chiefs are backing girls flag football in high schools as part of their Let Her Play campaign, enlisting local partners like HyVee in Topeka to hand out flags.
