COMMUNITY NEWS

  • WIBW-TV’s Hear me. See me. campaign won the NAB Service to America Award for small market television stations for its multi-year mental health initiative that began in January 2024. The campaign will be honored at an awards gala in June & continues to raise community awareness of mental health issues.  WIBW
  • Goldie and Emi Griess invite local residents to Paws in the Park, an event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 12 at the Helping Hands Humane Society building at 5720 SW 21st St, where senior dog Goldie is available for adoption at no cost while other adult dogs are offered on a name-your-price basis with a $50 minimum. Today after 3 p.m., the first 25 pet owners arriving at the shelter will have their pets microchipped for free—although a planned food truck night has been cancelled because of weather.  WIBW

CRIME NEWS

  • Topeka teen Delron Tyree Jr, 17, was arrested Thursday on charges including two counts of attempted first-degree murder — tied to a November 30 shooting in Riley County — and he remains held on robbery charges from his March arrest.  WIBW
  • Tremale M. Serrano was convicted last Friday on murder charges for the 2023 killing of Jackson E. Danner (Topeka’s 31st homicide victim) and Shawnee County District Attorney Mike Kagay has recommended a Hard 50 sentence.  KSNT

CULTURE NEWS

  • This month, NOTO is hosting many art exhibits that show works by artists of all ages. At Odin’s Lair, the Topeka Zoo has art pieces from 9 local artists and zoo animals that will be auctioned at Roar and Pour—while ArtsConnect opened the Remembering the Topeka Bottoms exhibit tonight and the Noto Arts Center is hosting the month-long Redbud Youth Festival for young artists.  WIBW

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Shawnee County Health Department will hold an open house from 3 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 8 at the *J.P. Lewis Building* on S.W. East Circle Drive to celebrate National Public Health Week. The event will let community members learn about the department’s services and programs.  WIBW
