COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Shoppers bundled up to support local vendors at the season’s first farmers market at Sixth and Harrison — a seasonal event held every Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to noon.  WIBW
  • Local community members stuffed the bus on Saturday at Fairlawn Plaza Dillon's by donating food items that do not spoil and money to help Project Topeka (a community effort). Officials said these donations will remain in Topeka and Shawnee County.  WIBW
  • The Adaptive Recreation Expo took place Saturday at Crestview Park and Community Center, showcasing adaptive sports and activities for all abilities — organizers plan to offer quarterly programs to expand opportunities.  WIBW
  • A 12-year-old was honored after he saved his neighbor’s home from a fire in March; the Stormont Vail Events Center and Oak View Group along with the Topeka Scarecrows awarded him VIP tickets to Saturday’s game — a gesture that included a ceremonial first puck invitation.  WIBW

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Topeka Zoo hosted its Eggstravaganza event Saturday, Apr. 4, giving guests fun with hidden papier-mâché eggs. Visitors watched lions, monkeys & tigers play with the eggs while enjoying warm weather ahead of the holiday weekend.  WIBW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ross Elementary opened its new Musical Garden today, featuring playful sculptures that let students explore art and music outdoors. The PTO designed the space to inspire creativity and community, with performances by elementary students, Topeka High School Madrigals (and the Highland Park Drumline) highlighting the launch.  WIBW
