COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Saturday, thousands of Kansans marched in cities such as Topeka, Lawrence, Wichita and Kansas City to protest against what they saw as an authoritarian threat coming from Washington — a united stand to defend free speech.  Kansas Reflector
  • Sole Reason, a local nonprofit, filmed a TV commercial at Evergy Plaza to promote Children’s Fest on Saturday, April 19, and the first 20 kids received free shoes. Founder Jerry Hudgins said the project gives kids a fun preview of the community event and highlights the value of coming together.  KSNT

CULTURE NEWS

  • At the 60th annual Blintze Brunch in Topeka, visitors enjoyed Jewish food, songs, dancing, a gift shop, bake sale, and silent auction. Proceeds will support programs at Temple Beth Sholom.  WIBW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today, 34 teachers from local districts were honored at the Kansas Teacher of the Year Region 2 Awards sponsored by the Kansas State Department of Education—two finalists will qualify for Teacher of the Year in 2026.  WIBW
  • Two teachers were named Region 2 finalists for Kansas Teacher of the Year 2026 on Sunday at a ceremony honoring outstanding educators. Troy St. Clair from Scott Dual Language Magnet School — and Julie Smith from Santa Fe Trail High School — will receive a $2,000 cash award and may win national honors.  WIBW
