ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Police identified Topeka resident Tramayne N. Smith (aged 33) as the driver who died when his vehicle went off the I-70 overpass near Southwest 2nd Street and South Kansas Avenue on April 5; he drove through a highway section under construction and no other vehicles were involved. KSNT
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Two people were arrested Friday morning near downtown Topeka for drug possession — David R. Adams, 51, who was driving a car with an expired license plate and illegal narcotics found, and Raven A. Coats, 42, who was a passenger, with both now booked into Shawnee County Jail as the investigation continues. WIBW
- ➤ Josiah Desmond Jerrell Williams, 38, of Topeka was arrested Friday after a traffic stop on US-75 north of Holton in Jackson County for drug possession and related violations — he was booked into the county jail. WIBW

- ➤ Henry McClure, a local real estate developer, filed last week to run for Topeka mayor and is one of three candidates for the Aug. 5 Primary Election. Voters will also elect city council members in districts one, three, five, seven and nine in the November General Election. KSNT
- ➤ Fifteen children were moved from group homes in Topeka and Lawrence operated by The Villages Inc. to a facility in New York after a removal order from the federal Office of Refugee Resettlement on March 29. The Villages ended the employment of its executive director and five workers and is developing corrective action plans with ORR (a judge blocked the removal of one child) in hopes of preserving its federal contract. - ➤ Governor Kelly vetoed House Bill 2311 on April 7 because the bill would have stopped state rules for placing children in foster care that may conflict with religious or moral beliefs — Senate President Masterson and House Speaker Hawkins issued joint statements on the decision. WIBW
- ➤ Shawnee County mailed second-half 2024 property tax statements on April 3, and property tax payments are due by Monday, May 12—payments made with debit or credit cards will incur a 2.5% convenience fee. WIBW
- ➤ Mayoral candidate Chad Fay made his first TV appearance today on 27 News morning newscast to explain his run for mayor and share his plan to listen to community concerns and improve local infrastructure. Fay, a lifelong Topeka resident, said he will work to unite the city council and give back to the community—promising targeted improvements for the city. KSNT

- ➤ Reagan Herrman, a 15-year-old Emporia student, suffered cardiac arrest during a summer basketball game at Washburn University when responders used an AED to restart her heart—her case led lawmakers to require public schools to develop emergency plans including CPR and AED training while allocating $1.5 million for these programs.
