ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Crews responded to a structure fire reported around 4:53 a.m. Friday on S.W. Lincoln Street in central Topeka — the home was fully involved in flames when responders arrived.  WIBW

CULTURE NEWS

  • A 1989 report from 13 NEWS Video Vault shares the story of Jerold Binkley who started the annual Jerold Binkley Tulip Time event in his yard over 30 years ago—his legacy now recognized as Shawnee Co. Parks and Rec officially hosts the tour of spring blooms this week.  WIBW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Topeka Community Foundation will award over $140,000 in scholarships to more than 85 high school students from Shawnee County and Kansas on Tuesday evening at the Topeka Country Club—2700 S.W. Buchanan—with a reception at 6:30 p.m. and a program starting at 7 p.m.—the event will connect donors with students and their families.  WIBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City Council will meet on Tuesday, April 15 to vote on a resolution to clear an extra $168,000 from the General Fund to help Hotel Topeka cover its operating costs. The city bought the hotel in October 2023 and has already approved more cash as costs rose — officials say the hotel may face a big loss in 2025.  KSNT
  • Commissioner Aaron Mays told 27 News that Tulip Time’s Tulips at Twilight starts tonight at Old Prairie Town at Ward-Meade Historic Site — a beloved spring event — and that the county moved its parks and recreation catalog online, saving about $60,000 a year. He said residents can share their views through a survey on the new Comprehensive Safety Action Plan for safer streets — the survey will guide public hearings in June — and urged everyone to take part.  KSNT
  • Kansas lawmakers changed the Medicaid bidding process after Aetna lost its bid to serve as a Medicaid provider & a new law required the executive branch to set new record-keeping rules and a legislative appeals panel to review disputes. The override passed in the Senate with votes of 30 & 10 and in the House with votes of 88 & 37 as Governor Kelly called the law an overreach.  Kansas Reflector
  • Today, the Kansas Department of Transportation announced that $8.1 million in federal funds — combined with $1.6 million in local contributions — will improve 11 rural roadway projects. The projects were selected from 29 applications to boost road safety and efficiency.  WIBW
  • On Friday, the Kansas House overrode Gov. Laura Kelly’s vetoes on 15 budget items after six lawmakers switched their votes to meet the Senate halfway. The override preserved key spending measures such as $3 million for a pregnancy compassion awareness program and funding for university projects—efforts that kept important funds in the state budget.  Kansas Reflector

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Local officials reported that the appraisal value for the former Heartland Motorsports Park dropped over $4.2 million from 2024 to 2025 as several parcels — including the drag strip and road course — saw steep decreases from vandalism and a shift in land use. The property was auctioned last year to cover a growing tax debt.  KSNT
