COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Volunteers painted a new mural in the Quinton Heights Welcome Center gym Saturday morning—Washburn University students and Highland Park High School alumni worked on artist Osbaldo Gonzales's design for the Community Cupboard. The artwork is meant to show community unity and welcome families who use the space.  WIBW
  • 13's morning meteorologist Doug Meyers was honored with the Legacy Award at the Forge Black Tie Gala held at the Beacon—an event that celebrated young professionals and recognized outstanding contributions to the community. He has long been involved with Forge and serves on its board.  WIBW
  • On Saturday morning, the Downtown Topeka Farmers Market opened for the season to mark its 95th anniversary. Over 100 vendors sold a variety of products and connected with the community.  WIBW
  • On Saturday morning, Helping Hands Humane Society hosted its annual Paws in the Park pet expo that brought families and their pets together for outdoor fun + vendor booths and an adoptable dog showcase, with a microchipping station offered to help keep pets safe + ensuring local animals are less likely to get lost.  WIBW

CULTURE NEWS

  • Kansans will see a rare smiley face in space at 5:30 a.m. on April 25 when Venus, Saturn and a thin crescent Moon come together to form a triangle. The view will be brief as the sun rises at 6:30 a.m. (no special equipment is needed).  KSNT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ross Elementary unveiled its new traffic garden on Saturday as LiveWell Shawnee County and the school painted a playground space to mirror real roads and teach safe biking and pedestrian habits. The garden shows painted road lines, crosswalks — and a simulated roundabout to help students learn traffic rules.  WIBW
  • Kids rode bikes and rollerblades around Evergy Plaza reading their favorite books and enjoying healthy snacks at the Roll & Read event organized by Topeka Public Schools Parents as Teachers—booths from local groups like United Way of Kaw Valley and the public library offered a live read-aloud session that brought stories to life.  WIBW

HEALTH NEWS

  • TK Fights Fentanyl hosted a community drug awareness event on April 12 where Topeka residents learned about drug dangers and mental health—founder Amber Saale-Burger said those struggling with addiction should seek help.  KSNT

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • In January, Shawnee County homes sold for a higher median price of $207,641—up 7.9% from December and 10.2% compared to January 2024—while single-family homes reached $215,406 and recorded sales fell by 9.7%, totaling $28.9 million in sales. This data indicates a rising market even as fewer homes changed hands.  The Topeka Capital-Journal
