COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The 41st Leadership Greater Topeka Graduation and Gala will take place on May 16 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Prairie Band Casino and Resort in Mayetta. Program director Michelle Cuevas Stubblefield said each graduating class has called itself the best class ever—an honor that shows they are ready to help improve our community.  WIBW
  • Topeka EasterFest will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. this Saturday, April 19, at Great Overland Station with a parade starting at 10 a.m. from the Kaw Valley Bank at NE Fairchild and N. Kansas Ave. The event will feature an 11 a.m. performance by the KC Marching Cobras — age-group Easter egg hunts, live music and vendors will provide fun for families.  WIBW
  • Advocates from Jana’s Campaign and Protecting Kansas Children from Sexual Predators visited Eye on NE Kansas today to share their personal stories during Sexual Assault Awareness Month — with Kim Bergman, a Survivor Advisory Council member for the Kansas Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence, and Kaiti Blackburn explaining their experiences. Their accounts aim to increase public awareness and support for survivors.  WIBW
  • Seventeen Kansas employers are taking part in the fifth annual Give Back Kansas Challenge that promotes volunteerism by letting employees log hours for prizes including a $1,000 grant for a nonprofit of their choice—organizers from Volunteer Kansas and the Kansas Volunteer Commission said businesses are grouped by employee size to determine winners based on average volunteer hours. The challenge runs from March 31 to May 23.  WIBW

CULTURE NEWS

  • A show called 'A Taste of Ireland — The Irish Music & Dance Sensation' will feature Irish dancing at the Topeka Performing Arts Center on May 1 at 7:30 p.m. The production will have live music and dances by international Irish champions.  WIBW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Washburn University Institute of Technology will welcome its incoming technical students at the 2025 National Technical Letter of Intent Signing Day tomorrow at 9:30 a.m.—the ceremony will feature student signings and remarks from Washburn leadership and local business leaders as students commit to enroll for fall.  WIBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Laura Kelly sent a letter to FEMA asking for a major presidential disaster declaration because severe weather including fires, thunderstorms, and a winter storm damaged roads, bridges, and utility infrastructure from March 14 to 19 — her request seeks cost-share funds for repairing public works — which will help local government and rural electric cooperatives rebuild.  WIBW
  • The Kansas Legislature passed Senate Bill 98 on the final day of the session to offer a 20-year sales tax exemption for companies building data centers with a minimum $250 million investment and at least 20 new jobs (Gov. Laura Kelly has 10 days to act on the bill).  Kansas Reflector

  • The Stormont Vail Foundation invites the public to recognize Dr. Rob Kenagy’s contributions and support efforts to address health outcome disparities by donating to the Rob and Tammy Kenagy Health Equity Fund. Donations can be made online or by mail to the Stormont Vail Foundation at 1500 S.W. 10th Avenue, Topeka — providing a direct way for community members to help improve local health care.  WIBW
