COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Community Action’s Head Start program will hold its third Swap and Shop event at 9 a.m. Friday, April 24, at 2400 S.E. Highland Ave (families can exchange gently used items for household goods, toys, and other essentials).  WIBW
  • SENT's Johnathan Sublet said findings using the TCES tool show families need more than the poverty line to meet costs, and the group will host a ribbon cutting for its expanded Southside Wellness Clinic on April 29 from 3 to 4 p.m. at its location (455 SE Golf Park Blvd).  WIBW

CULTURE NEWS

  • Dr. Judy Jacobs, a Holocaust survivor, will speak at the State of Kansas Holocaust Commemoration at 1 p.m. Monday, Apr. 20 at Topeka Civic Theatre (3028 SW 8th Ave) as the community remembers six million Jewish victims of the tragedy.  WIBW
  • Fiesta Topeka queen candidates from Topeka High are serving Mexican food to the community as part of a pre-festival food sale ahead of a five-day celebration in July; the sale continues through April 18 and resumes on April 20 with tacos, enchiladas, and tamales.  WIBW
  • Artist Shane is finishing a new mural at the zoo’s front entrance that raises awareness of ocean plastic pollution and its effect on wildlife. The work is nearly complete despite recent wind gusts, and he will soon start another mural in the new tigers exhibit under construction.  WIBW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Tuesday, sign language educator Petra Horn-Marsh urged the state Board of Education to restart the superintendent search at the School for the Deaf in Olathe (to include deaf members). The board toured the school Wednesday as finalists Jennifer Kucinski and Michele Handley now await a decision.  Kansas Reflector

  • Topeka's Housing and Credit Counseling Inc. merged with Money Management International to expand its financial counseling services with a 24/7 call center and enhanced online support while continuing its familiar debt help and tenant counseling programs as it shifts from a brick-and-mortar location to remote work established over 54 years.  WIBW
