COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Topeka’s Shriners will hold a garage sale at Arab Shrine Temple (1305 S. Kansas Ave) on April 22 and 23 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Donations accepted today (April 18) and tomorrow (April 19); a Kentucky Derby Party on May 2 will offer games, raffles and chicken dinner.  WIBW
  • NAMI Kansas will host its annual NAMI Walks at West Ridge Mall on Saturday, June 6 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., featuring storytelling, art displays and a scavenger hunt. An art project (at the mall’s lower level) will run on June 5 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.  WIBW

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Kansas Department of Labor report shows the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate held at 3.9% in February—unchanged from January—even as nonfarm payroll jobs dropped 3,800 while leisure and hospitality added 800. It is based on data collected the week of Feb. 12.  WIBW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Seaman School District held a breakfast fundraiser on April 17 to honor students receiving scholarships and teachers awarded grants (seven seniors received about $1,000 each and 14 teachers got project support). The district will host a golf tournament fundraiser on June 5 to further back education efforts.  WIBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Kansas Department of Transportation will close the westbound US-24 exit ramp for northbound NW Topeka Boulevard on Monday, Apr. 20 for about two weeks for concrete work (drivers will be redirected via N. Kansas Avenue and NW Lyman Road).  WIBW

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Kansas’s first 3D-printed home in Topeka now has its walls completed after 12 days of printing and moves into the next phase with windows, doors and finishing work. Trident Homes plans to have it move-in ready by June (using new technology to lower costs).  WIBW
