ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Firefighters rescued one woman with life-threatening injuries from a fire at an apartment complex in downtown Topeka at 4:30 p.m. on April 21—other residents left safely and the cause is under investigation.  KSNT
  • Officials identified Michael J. Ullman, 65, as the only victim of the deadly fire on the 400 block of Southeast Rodgers Street last Friday—firefighters arrived just after 5:50 a.m. and found no working smoke detectors while the fire remains under investigation.  KSNT

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Two major metal companies in Topeka now share a location at 300 Southwest Jackson Street to offer faster service and a wider range of metal options. The move is meant to help local customers and boost service quality – a change supported by local economic investment.  KSNT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Topeka native Mitch McVicker returns for a Christian music concert this Friday, April 25 at 7 p.m. at Highland Park United Methodist Church—he will perform songs from his new album and earlier works for local fans.  WIBW

  • Lieutenant Governor David Toland is urging job seekers and employers to join a statewide virtual job fair hosted by KANSASWORKS that will run from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. tomorrow—participants can access the fair from any digital device and request accommodations if needed.  WIBW
  • Officials said today that heavy weekend rain delayed the reopening of east-west traffic on S.W. 21st Street at Topeka Boulevard until Wednesday, April 23 instead of Tuesday. The roadway has been closed since last September for pavement and waterline replacement and additional work is scheduled through 2028—drivers should expect lane reductions in future phases while properties retain access.  WIBW
  • The Topeka Police Department announced that Lt. Eddie Stanley died Monday morning at his home after a medical emergency—he joined the department in 2001—and officials urged the community to keep his family in their thoughts.  KSNT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Stormont Vail Health will host its monthly Walk with a Doc on Saturday, April 26 at the east side of Lee Arena at Washburn University from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Community members will learn how organ donation gives someone another chance to live and can ask questions to health experts.  WIBW
  • Marvin Stottlemire, a cardiac arrest survivor, met his AMR responders on Monday and thanked them for saving his life—his reunion is set to be honored on the Tree of Life as it is updated with heroes’ names throughout the year. This recognition comes after his near-fatal experience, which rarely sees survival.  WIBW
  • Kansas health officials issued a boil water advisory for the City of St. Marys on April 21 due to a loss of water pressure that risks lowering chlorine levels and causing bacterial contamination—Residents must boil water for one minute or use bottled water until the advisory is lifted.  KSNT
