  • Helping Hands Humane Society offers $0 adoptions for dogs aged five months and older and has over 50 spayed cats available. Stormont Vail Events Center presents a Hairball fundraiser concert on May 8 with a buy 3 + get 1 free offer using code KITTY until 10 p.m. Apr. 26.  WIBW

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Thursday evening, the National Weather Service confirmed three EF-0 tornadoes: one near Volland lasted about a minute, another near Alma moved 3.34 miles from 7:03 to 7:09 p.m. & a third near Allen traveled one mile from 7:08 to 7:14 p.m., with no injuries reported.  WIBW

BUSINESS NEWS

  • AutoZone will open a Mega Hub in the old White Lakes Mall area in Topeka. The company will begin interviewing on May 5 at its California Avenue office and break ground early in May — the hub is expected to create about 40 jobs.  WIBW
  • SME Live will take place Tuesday, April 28 from 8 to 11 a.m. at the Civic Theatre as local Sales and Marketing Executives emphasize a human touch in a high-tech world (tickets cost $100 and are available at SMETopeka.org).  WIBW

CULTURE NEWS

  • Tulips at Twilight features over 20,000 blooming tulips and reopened Friday after a brief weather closure—organizers warn that rain may force an early end, so Saturday night is the safest visit before the event wraps up in two days.  WIBW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students at Wanamaker Elementary School hosted an art show on Thursday, Apr. 23 to display paintings, dioramas and sculptures while families toured the exhibits. Funds raised will benefit the Ronald McDonald House.  WIBW
  • Katelyn Andrist, crowned Miss Augusta, visited Community Action Head Start yesterday morning to read from her book (Becoming Confident) and discuss self-belief with young students.  WIBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Kansas GOP leaders filed a federal ethics complaint against pastor Adam Hamilton for using church resources to publicize his potential U.S. Senate run. Hamilton, head of the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Leawood who released a video on Feb. 27, will decide his candidacy after Easter.  Kansas Reflector
  • On Monday, April 27, the Kansas Department of Transportation will begin replacing the California Avenue bridge, setting detour routes on Southeast 10th, Adams, and 21st streets (I-70 will see limited closures). The bridge will close mid-May with work expected through late fall, conditions permitting.  WIBW

SPORTS NEWS

  • KU women's basketball named two Kansas natives, Jerise Freeman and Jayci Stone, to its staff. Freeman returns from Oregon while Stone joins from Arkansas, and the team will use their experience to boost training + recruiting efforts.  WIBW
  • Washburn golf posted postseason honors as head coach Ronnie McHenry was named MIAA Women’s Co-Coach of the Year plus Jacob Fratzel earned MIAA Freshman of the Year after recording six top-10 finishes while teammates also received All-MIAA recognitions.  WIBW
  • Oklahoma State signed former Washburn Rural standout Zoe Canfield on Tuesday to strengthen its women’s basketball squad. The 5-foot-11 guard played at KU and most recently with Missouri State and is expected to boost the team’s long-range scoring.  WIBW
  • Emporia State will travel to Washburn for a three-game series at Steve Anson Stadium this weekend (Friday at 5 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.). The Hornets, fresh off a win, aim to build on their top offensive form in the league.  WIBW
