COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The Topeka Zoo hosted its 7th annual Roar and Pour Wine Fest where 15 wineries offered tastings and local artists auctioned pieces to raise funds for zoo conservation, education and operations. The fundraiser raised money to help cover running costs—proceeds went directly back to the zoo. WIBW
- ➤ Sleep in Heavenly Peace built about 50 beds on Saturday morning in the Owls Nest parking lot at 29th & Adams so kids can have a cozy place to sleep. The nonprofit has delivered over 400 beds in less than two years as community support made the work possible. WIBW
- ➤ On prom night, T.H. Peterson Photography provided free professional photos for prom-goers—many registered ahead while others were surprised—and will host a final free session on May 3 at Ted Ensley Gardens from 5 to 6:30. WIBW
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Highland Park High School was improved this morning by ShareFest volunteers who repainted, moved mulch, and cleared an overgrown area into an outdoor classroom—changes that are set to boost school morale. Students, staff, and community members worked together on the environmental science area on 25th street—transforming it into a welcoming space for lunch and outdoor learning. WIBW
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Topeka drivers will face new routes next year when I-70 shuts down for six months for the reconstruction of the Polk-Quincy Viaduct—drivers must follow the marked detour on I-470 or use alternate city streets to access downtown. Kansas Avenue will be closed between Third Street and the Kansas River while officials work with the city on design changes. KSNT
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ On April 26, NAMIWalks raised money and awareness for free mental health support as community members joined the annual walk and visited resource tables—offering free programs and educational support for those affected by mental illness. NAMI Kansas provided support to people with mental health conditions and their families. WIBW
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Kids of all abilities competed today in the first Unified Track and Field Competition—organized by Special Olympics Kansas—to run 100 meter, 200 meter and 400 meter races. Over 50 unified pairs from Shawnee County and Kansas City joined the event to earn medals and celebrate inclusion. WIBW
- ➤ On April 26, Washburn University dedicated its men’s baseball stadium to longtime coach Steve Anson before a game against Newman University. The venue now features over $1.5 million in renovations—new padded fencing, a Daktronics scoreboard, LED lights and an upgraded turf field—to honor his 35-year legacy and lasting impact on the program. - ➤ Washburn and Emporia State ended their regular season at Gahnstrom Field Saturday when Washburn won game one 8-0 in five innings and Emporia State won game two 4-2 on Senior Day. Both teams will head to Hays for the MIAA Tournament that runs from April 30th through May 3rd—Emporia State will open on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. while Washburn plays in the quarterfinals on Thursday at 4:00 p.m. WIBW
