CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, community members, including Senator Dietrich, Senator Corson, Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt, and historian Lindsay McNeil, will gather at the Topeka Civic Theatre for the annual Kansas Holocaust Commemoration that honors lives lost and the harsh lessons of the past—open to everyone in Kansas.  KSNT
  • The Kansas Arts Commission has selected 10 artists for the 2025 Tallgrass Artist Residency program in Matfield Green — near the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve in Chase County. More than half the artists are from Kansas and will present public programs, workshops and a group exhibition at the Fall Gathering event on Saturday, October 4.  WIBW
  • Renowned pianist Dr. Kristi Baker-Lampe performed Beethoven classics and original pieces from South America without sheet music at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library yesterday—she said her performance was her way to paint pictures with music. She returned home to share her art with both longtime friends and new listeners and the library will host another event on May 18 at 3:00 p.m.  WIBW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Two Washburn University professionals received awards from the Kansas Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators in Manhattan earlier this month. Darcy Johnson was inducted into the KASFAA Hall of Fame—recognizing her leadership during COVID-19 and her role in training financial aid professionals—and Ginger McBride earned the Rising Star Award for her promising work in advising students.  WIBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The State of Kansas will invest $1M in the Collaborative Sorghum Investment Program as part of the FY26 budget to support water-smart crop innovations in the next State Water Plan—program partners will leverage matching funds from the United Sorghum Checkoff Program and the Kansas Grain Sorghum Commission to reach a total of $5.8M through 2036.  WIBW
  • A performance audit by Kansas Medicaid Inspector General Steven D- Anderson showed that changing school healthcare reimbursement to Managed Care Organizations instead of fee-for-service payments could save taxpayers about $22.5 million annually. The report made 12 findings and 47 recommendations and noted one school used an invalid NPI on claims that resulted in $390,543 in improper payments.  WIBW
