COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Topeka Metro will offer youth aged 18 and under free rides through its Kids Ride FREE! program from May 1 through August 31 to help families travel safely around town. Children five and under must ride with an adult and teens may need to show proof of age (agency rules).  WIBW
  • Following heavy rains on April 27, Chavez Restoration in Topeka received 50 to 60 calls about flooded basements and advised residents to inspect drainage systems. The firm recommends checking sump pumps and cleaning gutters (common weak points) to help prevent costly water damage.  WIBW
  • Safe Kids Day at the Zoo will be held Saturday, May 2 at the Topeka Zoo from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. More than two dozen area partners will offer child safety tips and free bike helmets from 9 a.m. to Noon.  WIBW
  • Local postal workers and Harvesters volunteers invite residents to help stamp out hunger by leaving non-perishable food items in a bag next to their mailbox on Saturday, May 9 + flyers with drive details will soon be mailed.  WIBW

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Topeka Troupers, local poets, storytellers and musicians from the Kansas Authors Club, will visit small house parties to share their art - they charge a minimum fee of $30 per event.  WIBW

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Travel experts urge Topeka travelers to book summer vacations soon as rising gas prices + increased air traffic due to the World Cup push up travel costs. AAA recommends making reservations 2+3 months ahead to adapt plans and avoid price hikes.  WIBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today at 4:10 a.m., Topeka administrators closed Shawnee Lake cove after heavy rainfall caused a manhole to overflow near Pump Station #42 on Southeast East Edge Road, and residents are advised to avoid water contact until tests confirm safety.  The Topeka Capital-Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Operation Red Folder, a program that gives Kansans red folders with vital medical information for first responders, has expanded statewide from its Topeka start. Residents can pick up a packet at the Cyrus K. Holliday Building to help save lives in emergencies.  The Topeka Capital-Journal

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The Shawnee County Commission approved $12 million in bonds for a new low-income apartment building at 37th and Gage, designed for residents earning 60% or less of the median income. Resource Housing Group, Inc. will apply for funding on May 15 and if funded, groundbreaking will begin next spring (completion expected in 2028).  WIBW

SPORTS NEWS

  • The No. 11 Kansas Jayhawks baseball team is having a record season as junior college transfers bolster the lineup (only eight of 36 were recruited after high school) and Hoglund Ballpark set a new attendance record with 2,674 fans. The team will visit Wichita State today at 6:05 p.m.  WIBW
  • Washburn defeated Emporia State 6-3 in game three of the Turnpike Tussle series, winning 2-1 on Apr. 26 — after a nearly three-hour delay in the final inning.  WIBW
