COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The 92nd annual Fiesta Topeka kicked off Tuesday with preview events and tasty foods to raise funds for Holy Family Catholic School—community members gathered to support the school while enjoying the festival's offerings. Milagro Alvarado is the sole fiesta royalty candidate eager to build leadership skills as she helps drive the event’s success.  WIBW
  • The American Cancer Society will celebrate 40 years of Relay for Life of Shawnee Co. at Hummer Sports Park from 6 to 11 p.m. Friday, May 16—where cancer survivors will lead the first lap and participants will join a luminaria ceremony.  WIBW
  • Jerold Binkley Tulip Time will hold a tulip bulb sale on Saturday, May 3, at two sites: the Howey greenhouse at SE 41st and Howey, open from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., and Old Prairie Town, open from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. Prices are $5 per bag at both sites and $10 per 5-gallon bucket at the greenhouse — proceeds will support Friends of Ted Ensley and Friends of Ward-Meade.  WIBW

ECONOMY NEWS

  • KANSASWORKS will host a statewide Virtual Job Fair from May 16 to 18 — it will run from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day — to offer Kansans virtual interviews, live chats, and online application tools for new career opportunities.  WIBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Topeka Police Department invites the public to line up along Lt. Ed Stanley’s funeral route today, with his 11 a.m. service at Northland Christian Church followed by a private burial at Mount Hope Cemetery. The procession will travel from Northland onto NW Menninger Rd, head south on N Kansas Ave crossing the Kansas River, continue on S Kansas Ave through downtown, and turn west onto SW 17th St to Mount Hope Cemetery — giving locals a way to honor his memory.  WIBW
  • The Kansas Corporation Commission is asking for public comments on two rate hike proposals—Evergy wants a $196.4 million increase to help build a solar facility and gas plants, and Black Hills Energy seeks a $17.2 million hike that may add $11 to monthly bills. A hearing for Black Hills Energy is set for today at 6 p.m. at Wichita State University, and comments can be submitted until July 14 for Evergy and until June 20 for Black Hills Energy.  KSNT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Kansas health groups warned Tuesday that potential congressional cuts to Medicaid could cost nearly $350 million in the first year and over $3 billion in 10 years—reducing coverage for 366,000 enrollees and putting two dozen rural hospitals at risk of closing.  Kansas Reflector
  • Alex Burghart in Topeka struggled with severe drug addiction from his teens until he found help through the Work For Success Program and Mirror’s Residential Treatment. With his family’s support, he will mark one year of sobriety on May 2nd — a hopeful milestone in his journey toward lasting recovery.  WIBW
