COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The U.S. Air Force Band will perform a free concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 5 at the Topeka Performing Arts Center as part of Military Appreciation Month—organizers from the Topeka Jazz Workshop will also host a celebration starting at 5 p.m. outside the Holliday Building with local school performances and special recognitions.  WIBW

CRIME NEWS

  • Police investigated a stabbing early Thursday at 6:28 a.m. in the Oakland neighborhood of northeast Topeka on the 1100 block of N.E. Strait Avenue—just west of Philip Billard Municipal Airport as officials reported only minor injuries occurred.  WIBW

CULTURE NEWS

  • Cinco de Mayo Viva will take place from 2 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday, May 3 at Evergy Plaza in downtown Topeka & will feature food, live music, Hispanic dancers, vendors and a Grito contest, with Ronald Ruiz outlining the celebration details.  WIBW
  • Washburn University will host an event to honor the historic 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision on May 18 at the Memorial Union. Tim Wise will speak to the community and a Q&A session and meet-and-greet will follow — registration is required because space is limited.  WIBW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Federal funding cuts proposed to Head Start may reduce vital support for East Topeka children and families, with educators warning that the loss of funds could hurt early learning and care. Gov. Kelly said state money cannot replace federal dollars — leaving schools without resources for repairs, materials, and staffing costs.  WIBW
  • Topeka High School's Spectrum and Friends club, started two years ago by senior Isabella Culbertson, meets every other week to help neurodivergent and neurotypical students build social skills and friendships—members say the group makes them feel more understood.  WIBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Laura Kelly ordered flags statewide to fly at half-staff on May 4 for National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Day (state offices will display the flags from sunup to sundown) to honor firefighters who risk their lives for our communities.  WIBW
  • Shawnee County leaders celebrated the courthouse’s 60th anniversary as its $14.5 million modernization project finished with new HVAC, windows and courtroom upgrades. Officials said the improvements—funded by the American Rescue Plan Act—reduced disruptions during construction while setting the stage for planned repairs such as roof replacement and landscaping.  WIBW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Scooter’s Coffee in Topeka announced that nurses and healthcare workers will receive a free medium drink of their choice on Tuesday, May 6 to mark National Nurses Week—limited Healthcare Heroes stickers will also be available while supplies last.  WIBW
