- ➤ On First Friday, the Topeka Art Guild opened its gallery to display local art from Hayden High students and awarded scholarships at 5 p.m. to high school seniors Aradia Freed, Kyleigh Chrisman, and Brigitte Theroff—two scholarships of $1,000 and one of $300. WIBW
- ➤ On May 2, sixth graders at Pauline South Intermediate School attended Career Day and rotated every 30 minutes to hear from experts (nurse, civil engineer, architect, forensic investigator, contractor, and golf course manager). They also helped with a 13 NEWS video project while learning about careers in photojournalism and reporting. WIBW
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Governor Kelly issued a state of disaster emergency proclamation on April 30 to allow a waiver for hours of service for motor carriers facing fuel shortages that delayed supply delivery — the Kansas Corporation Commission granted a temporary 14-day waiver of federal limits for both intrastate and interstate carriers. - ➤ A bipartisan group of 16 legislators, state officials & experts met this week to plan policy changes that will guide Kansas’s water supply management and fund water projects. The task force, created under House Bill 2172, will share a preliminary report by the end of January and a final report by January 2027. Kansas Reflector
- ➤ The state ended April with tax collections of $1.33 billion — 1.3% above estimates even though the total fell 5.9% from last year. Governor Kelly said the results show strong fiscal health as officials plan to continue responsible budgeting. WIBW
- ➤ Kansas law enforcement added Detective Charles Meeks and Deputy Glenn Curtiss to the state memorial during a ceremony at the Capitol on May 2nd — Gov.
