- ➤ Fairlawn Fiesta hosted a concert and car show on May 3—dozens attended to admire refurbished cars, enjoy live music and food trucks. A local car owner said he spent more than 12 years perfecting his ride and values the community support. KSNT
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ On Friday night, Topeka Police responded to reports of gunshots at SW 13th and SW Boswell and found a person with life-threatening injuries who was pronounced dead; this marked the city's 6th homicide investigation of 2025. WIBW
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Rita Blitt Gallery at Washburn’s Mulvane Art Museum reopened nearly five months after flooding and a snowstorm forced it to close last winter — the reopening features a new exhibit that pairs music with art and will run until Aug. 30. KSNT
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Kansas Department of Commerce International Division received the REPP Member of the Year Award from the Export-Import Bank at its 2025 Annual Conference in Washington, D.C.—Lieutenant Governor David Toland announced the honor last week to recognize the Division’s work hosting webinars that aid Kansas exporters. - ➤ Shawnee County announced a Trails and Greenways Study to improve public trails and gather community input for a new master plan. Officials held the first meeting last night at the First Friday Artwalk — additional pop-up meetings will be scheduled and the final draft will be unveiled in August. WIBW

- ➤ The Topeka Zoo hosted its 10th annual Safe Kids Day to show families how to prevent injuries—local organizations shared safety tips, free bike helmets were given to children, and State Farm granted $30,000 to support the event. WIBW
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ The MIAA released the bracket for its postseason baseball tournament, scheduled to be held in Joplin from May 7th through May 10th. Washburn, the 7-seed, will face Northeastern State at 1:00 p.m. on May 7th — while Emporia State, the 9-seed, will play Missouri Southern at 4:00 p.m. WIBW
- ➤ Runners participated in the 6th annual Top City Half Marathon and 5K, which followed a course from the Brown V Board of Education building through the Collins Park neighborhood to finish at Evergy Plaza. Race director Marc Price said the race was designed to showcase Topeka’s landmarks — and it supported local youth through a Girls on the Run event. KSNT
- ➤ Washburn men’s tennis won its third straight MIAA Tournament by sweeping Ouachita Baptist 4-0 in the championship match on Friday and clinching the regular season title. The team will learn its NCAA Tournament fate when the selection show airs today at 8:30 p.m. WIBW
