COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Kansas Children’s Discovery Center will open three new accessibility spaces on Friday, May 9th—one with a remodeled family restroom featuring a universal changing table, a Nest Room for breastfeeding, and a Cocoon Sensory room for quiet play. The multimillion-dollar expansion will help ensure all families feel welcome as the full project is set to open in fall.  WIBW

CULTURE NEWS

  • Lowman United Methodist Church hosted its first Mothersong a Poemplay event to kick off early Mother's Day celebrations by featuring readings of poems about grief and growth — the event supported the Topeka Doula Project.  WIBW
  • The Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library hosted a flamenco performance Saturday morning in which 45 Grados Flamenco taught the origins of Spanish and American song forms — a show that explained cultural influences from Mexico to Cuba.  WIBW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At the Governor’s Scholars Awards Program, hundreds of high school seniors in the top 1% were honored for academic success — recognizing years of hard work and leadership. Many students are now looking ahead to college and career opportunities.  WIBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Two road projects are set to take place in Topeka today as the eastbound lane on SE 37th at Massachusetts Ave closes for pavement repairs due to a waterline break and will reopen in two weeks. The westbound lane on SW 8th Ave will close at SW Orleans St for storm sewer inlet and pipe replacement, with drivers advised to yield to oncoming traffic and the road reopening in three weeks.  WIBW
  • The City of Topeka Utilities Department is celebrating Drinking Water Week from May 4 to 10 by sharing behind-the-scenes views of water treatment and conservation tips on social media—local elementary schools are also getting water education to learn about clean water's role in health and safety.  WIBW
  • The Kansas Legislature approved a tax-advantaged savings account for first-time home buyers that helps Kansans save money for a new home and reduce their state income taxes. The FTHB Savings Account is offered through qualified financial institutions and lets single filers deduct up to $3,000 & joint filers up to $6,000 from their Kansas income tax returns.  WIBW
