- ➤ Dogs on the Lawn Spring Cookout & Concert will be held at Topeka High School front lawn on Wednesday, May 6, starting at 5:30 p.m. with a $5 hot dog dinner and a concert at 6:30 p.m., and will move indoors to The Dungeon if it rains. WIBW
- ➤ The United Gospel Movement Choir, joining voices from 16 congregations, will perform a free Mother’s Day gospel tribute at 6 p.m. Saturday, May 9, at Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church in Topeka + it marks their third annual celebration. WIBW

- ➤ Skechers will open its Topeka location next Friday, May 15, at 10 a.m. at 1700 SW Wanamaker Road next to the new Rally House building for customers. WIBW
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Washburn University students are managing their coffee and energy drink intake today as finals week pushes them to boost focus while watching for jitters (FDA guidelines suggest up to 400 milligrams daily) and balance hydration and sleep. WIBW
- ➤ Washburn University will sponsor a free STEM day camp for seventh and eighth graders from July 6-10 and July 13-17 at its campus - applications are due by May 29. WIBW
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ City officials launched the TSC Get Digital campaign on Monday to boost technology access by offering low-to-moderate income residents devices, internet and digital literacy training. Eligible residents must submit required documents for scheduled device pickup. WIBW
- ➤ KDOT said the intersection at Topeka Boulevard and 1st Street reopens today after more than a year of limited access that separated the city’s north and south. Drivers will see new signals, turn lanes & access ramps while southbound traffic from I-70 goes only toward downtown. WIBW
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Michael Eichten, a local hockey advocate, presented his plan today for a stand-alone facility on county land at SW 21st and Urish that would include an ice rink, four indoor pickleball courts and a community room—he estimates $4 to $5 million while county officials expect higher costs and require donations. - ➤ Washburn right-hander Gavin Wilhelm was named MIAA Baseball Pitcher of the Week after pitching 6.1 scoreless innings against No. 5 Pittsburg State to secure a 5-0 win; he will pitch in the MIAA Tournament on Wednesday, May 6 in Edmond, Okla. at 4 p.m. WIBW
- ➤ Topeka native NiJa Canady, a standout Texas Tech pitcher, was drafted No. 2 overall by the Texas Volts on Monday, May 4 + will join the team this summer as they open their season on June 9 in Oklahoma City. WIBW
