COMMUNITY NEWS

  • City Manager Dr. Robert Perez invites Topeka residents to join a bike ride to honor National Bike Month on Friday, May 16 at noon starting at City Hall—215 SE 7th St. Participants of all ages and skill levels are encouraged to bring their own bikes and helmets.  WIBW

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas was named Call Center of the Year by SQM Group for the fourth time—this award honors its strong customer service and quick first call resolution. The company also earned honors for its email service and employee experience, which show its commitment to members.  WIBW

CULTURE NEWS

  • For The Culture KS has cancelled its fest scheduled for July 26 and 27 but will hold its Black-Tie Gala fundraising event on July 24 from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at Townsite Plaza; organizers said the change aims to refocus efforts on future nonprofit goals.  WIBW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Dollar General Literacy Foundation awarded about $65,000 in grants to Kansas libraries, schools and nonprofits near its stores to improve literacy programs. The record one-day donation will help nearly 9,000 individuals by funding new technology, books and materials — and software.  WIBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Topeka Utilities Department finished six major utility relocation projects in downtown to prepare for KDOT’s PQV improvement project. Contractors relocated water, stormwater, and wastewater lines over the past year—clearing the area for upcoming roadway, bridge, and safety upgrades.  WIBW

HEALTH NEWS

  • The American Red Cross Kansas shared water safety tips today to help families avoid drowning during swimming season—advising constant supervision, swimming with a buddy, and wearing life jackets on boats. The organization also relaunched its WHALE Tales program in Spanish to teach vital water safety skills to young children.  WIBW
