ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A popular eatery in North Topeka Arts District will reopen today after a car crashed into its front on Friday, causing extensive damage and minor injuries—crews replaced the storefront and the restaurant promised a special sandwich to mark the reopening. WIBW
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Roofers Mart, a Missouri-based supplier of roofing and building products, will open its first Kansas branch in southeast Topeka this fall at 2220 Southeast Lakewood Boulevard. The branch will operate Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. with holiday closures—ensuring local contractors have reliable access to home improvement supplies later this year—supporting the growing market in the area. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A 39-year-old man—identified as James Damond Edwards—was booked into Shawnee County Jail on Monday after police arrested him for robbery and theft near S.W. 6th and Western avenues in Topeka. WIBW
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Pauline South Intermediate School received a $5,000 grant from the Laura Bush Foundation for America's Libraries to add books and audiobooks—one of 220 schools chosen from 38 states. Library Media Specialist Lisa Duncan said the grant will boost reading levels for third- and fourth-graders and prepare fifth-graders for next year. WIBW
- ➤ Auburn-Washburn USD 437 approved a new bus fee policy on May 12 that will require some families living within two miles of school to pay for round-trip transportation. The fee is $250 for elementary students, $125 for secondary students, and families with both pay $250 — service remains free for students eligible for reduced-price meals, special transportation, or authorized daycare. - ➤ Topeka Public Schools Superintendent Tiffany Anderson and nurse Suzanne Kates appeared on 27 News to discuss Nurses Week — May 6 to 12 — and TPS is actively hiring nurses.
