COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Run for the Wall motorcycle ride for veterans will stop in Junction City on Sunday, May 17 around 5:40 p.m. for a memorial ceremony at Heritage Park (with tolls and fuel covered by donations) before continuing east on I-70 to reach Washington, D.C. on Saturday, May 23.  WIBW
  • Heritage Grove Estates (formerly McCrite Plaza) hosted a 50s-themed car show for nursing home week, offering residents a chance to enjoy classic cars and a barbecue lunch that showcased community spirit. The event highlighted the living center's commitment to engaging its residents in fun local activities.  WIBW
  • Junior League of Topeka launched Project Period to supply feminine hygiene products to women in need. Members host period packing parties to assemble supply packs (pads, tampons, and more) for schools and nonprofits as demand continues to outpace supply.  WIBW

CULTURE NEWS

  • Community members continue painting a mural under the Kansas Avenue Bridge in Veterans Park — supporting the Kansas Avenue Memorial Bridge project. Elementary students from Elmont and Quincy provided designs, and work will be completed when the bridge project finishes in July.  WIBW
  • Social justice attorney Ben Crump will deliver the keynote address at the sold-out 72nd anniversary event for Brown v. Board in Topeka on Sunday, May 17. Attendees can also learn about the case at the Brown v. Board National Historic Park.  WIBW

ECONOMY NEWS

  • AAA said Kansas unleaded gas fell 2 cents to $4.09 per gallon on Thursday morning, still 60 cents above last month and $1.25 higher than a year ago. Diesel fuel also dropped slightly to $5.16 per gallon, though prices remain high.  WIBW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Parents in Shawnee Heights put colorful messages on seniors' car windows as a sign of support, with the high school graduation ceremony scheduled for this Sunday (at the Stormont Vail Events Center).  WIBW

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Shawnee County crews are starting seasonal weed control to enforce updated Kansas rules (effective in May) that help protect farmland and native ecosystems, and landowners needing help may contact the county department.  WIBW

FINANCE NEWS

  • Topeka residents can join the Money Moves Pop-Up Initiative to learn budgeting, saving, credit and financial planning skills from experts. The free session runs from 5:30 to 6 p.m. Thursday, May 28 (at Azura Credit Union parking lot, 610 S.W. 10th Ave) in a relaxed, outdoor setting.  WIBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Officials have revealed a traffic control plan for graduation weekend at Stormont Vail Events Center, where deputies will help drivers exit SW Topeka Boulevard by requiring right turns only & managing one-lane traffic due to construction delays.  WIBW
  • Shawnee County is moving ahead with the Gage Park Carousel Renovation project after the Board approved a $1.8 million GMP amendment for building demolition and structural updates. The new facility will house the refurbished carousel and host future events (summer camps and rentals).  WIBW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Stormont Vail Behavioral Health in Topeka now offers a virtual Adult Intensive Outpatient Program that meets three hours a day, three days a week to support adults needing extra care between therapy and hospital stays. The program helps people with anxiety, depression and bipolar disorder and is available through most insurance plans.  WIBW
  • Topeka Yoga Network introduced new bungee cloths Thursday, May 14 at 925 S Kansas Ave to enable accessible aerial fitness and strength workouts + many participants now have a unique way to try new yoga poses.  WIBW
