COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Topeka Rescue Mission Ministries needs donations including bottled water, electrolyte drinks, sports clothing and furniture as clients prepare for housing. Donations can be dropped off at the TRM Distribution Center at 401 NW Norris Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.  WIBW
  • The Shawnee County Commission approved a $109,651 purchase of new playground equipment for Garfield Park + a $50,000 Dreams grant was secured to help fund the update, with installation planned around December to benefit park visitors.  WIBW

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Topeka’s Goodwill (5515 SW 21st St.) reopened today after closing for nearly two months for a full remodel. MERS Goodwill held a ribbon cutting celebration to mark the rebranding following its merger with MERS Missouri Goodwill and Goodwill of Western Missouri and Eastern Kansas.  WIBW
  • Packaging manufacturer Futamura USA kicked off its 10th anniversary three-day carnival Thursday evening at 6000 SW 2nd St in Shawnee County. The celebration will end Saturday with fireworks and include new product launches that may create more jobs (Basore said).  WIBW

CULTURE NEWS

  • Artist INC offers a workshop series helping Topeka artists learn planning, budgeting and marketing skills to build their business. Sessions run Tuesday nights from Sept. 1 to Oct. 27 at ArtsConnect (909 N. Kansas Ave), and applications close on June 10.  WIBW
  • The Topeka & Shawnee Co. Public Library is hosting a Story Slam on Wednesday, May 27 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., where all ages can share or listen to five-minute summer vacation stories; those wishing to speak must pre-register online.  WIBW

ECONOMY NEWS

  • AAA reported that Memorial Day weekend gas prices in Kansas have reached a four-year high, with unleaded averaging $4.11 a gallon+ prices are up $1.22 from a year ago and supply pressures could keep costs high as drivers plan holiday trips.  WIBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Since November, candidate Cindy Holscher’s TikTok channel has showcased behind-the-scenes clips by her daughter Maddie (including viral memes and candid campaign moments) that bring a personal touch to her run for governor. HEALTH NEWS

  • New mothers in Topeka may feel the baby blues after birth (up to 80% experience mood swings) that usually ease in a couple of weeks. Doctors advise asking for help if severe feelings or long-lasting mood drops occur and suggest using local resources.  WIBW

  • Josh Alters, the Inclusive Leadership Coordinator with Special Olympics Kansas, was selected as one of three U.S. delegates to attend the Special Olympics Global Athlete Congress next fall in Chile. He was chosen after a competitive process that narrowed 10 finalists.  WIBW
