COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Officials announced Thursday morning that a one-stop homeless resource center will open in July at Let's Help’s campus at 245 S.W. MacVicar Ave and will offer mobile health services, shelter support + housing navigation through local partnerships. The pilot program, led by Compassion Strategies, Let's Help and the All Hands On Deck Campaign, aims to provide integrated assistance to people facing homelessness in Topeka.  WIBW
  • The Topeka Community Cycle Project announced a bike parts vending machine will launch on May 27 at noon at Shawnee County Central Park Community Center—funded by Azura Credit Union and stocked with brake pads, shift cables, bike chains, tubes and bar tape. It will operate Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturdays from noon to 3 p.m.  KSNT
  • Bison Pet Academy with Scout Troop 59 will be held Saturday, May 31 at First Lutheran Church, 1234 SW Fairlawn Rd. in Topeka, where scouts can earn animal care and science merit badges from 8 a.m. to Noon and then join a free community event from 1 to 5 p.m. featuring local pet groups — including Helping Hands Humane Society and Team Kitten.  WIBW

  • Today, Topeka residents joined police at Little Oakland Park for a picnic as the department launched the new PACT initiative—a plan that will use more patrols including bicycle patrols to reduce violent crime and boost community input.  WIBW
  • Kansas Gov. Kelly and lawmakers condemned the fatal shooting of Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgrim — embassy staff members shot while leaving a Jewish museum in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday night — and urged swift action against antisemitic terrorism.  WIBW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Kansas Children’s Discovery Center in Topeka is inviting families to support its $11.5 million expansion that will add interactive areas such as a sensory room and a climbable sunflower—participants can buy a custom ceramic tile for $150 and must submit artwork by August 8.  WIBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Four state veteran cemeteries will hold remembrance ceremonies at 10 a.m. Monday, May 26 — at Fort Dodge, Wakeeny, Winfield and Manhattan-Fort Riley — as volunteers place flags on graves to honor veterans who gave their lives.  WIBW
  • Gov. Laura Kelly issued an executive order on Thursday — the order requires flags to be flown at half-staff from sunup until noon on Monday, May 26 to honor Memorial Day.  WIBW

SPORTS NEWS

  • Tomorrow, thousands will gather downtown at Evergy Plaza 2.0 for a boxing title fight where local fighter John 'the Iron Man' Cantrell will face Jurmain 'the Shocker' McDonald, with gates opening at 5 p.m. and fights starting at 6 p.m. Updated ticket sales allow fans to purchase beer and pizza in a designated area, and beer tents and food trucks will serve attendees rain or shine.  KSNT
